CC.CRANE RADIOS. . . JUNK ????

Casablanca said:
Anyone have the same battery and digital read out problems I have had with my C Crane? It is 5 or so years old and I guess out of warranty. Still, it is not abused, never moved and fresh batteries are always in it. As to the digital problems it make it near impossible to read the call out numbers and know what station you have turned to.

Any suggestions, short of dumping the radio which I would rather not do.

Casablanca, let's face it... you have been conned, pure and simple. You hate the radio and if I were in your position, I would not hesitate to cut bait, junk it and buy one you're really happy with. True, you're out a couple hundred bucks, but just feel fortunate that you were/are not in my position of being conned out of THOUSANDS by a slick fast talking car salesman... I found out quite some time after purchasing a vehicle a few years ago that it was in fact salvaged... No, I won't mention which dealership because they were a big client on a station I used to work for, and I don't want to go down that road... but just let me say that they are "reputable"... WATCH OUT...and they knew damn well what they were selling me... and no, before someone asks it didn't show up on CarFax because it was a rental car and the rental place must've covered up the damage in-house... my stupidity for buying a former rental car.

I guess the lesson here, whether it is a car or a piece of audio equipment, is "buyer beware".

Also webcastboy's post about Radio Shack made me laugh out loud... I don't think I will get much argument here about the fact that 95--- no... 99% of what Radio Shack sells is pure CRAPOLA, up until 5 minutes ago I thought the only thing safe buying at Radio (Junk) Shack was the cables, but after reading webcastboy's post, now I will think twice before even buying an RCA cable there! Gheesh!

A splitter, maybe? Or a pack of batteries? Naw, those are probably garbage, too. :D

I make a lot of fun of Radio Shack..."You've got questions, we've got blank stares!"...but in all honesty I'm very glad they're around, especially with one a short walk down the road from my house. Saves me the trip to You Do It (which is overpriced but at least their selection is excellent and the staff reasonably knowledgeable) or the hassle of ordering online and waiting. Plus I frequently find stuff on clearance in RS that I re-purpose or use for parts. And actually the pretty-good battery selection has really saved my bacon a handful of times.

I also have to give RS props for being the first major retailer to carry HD Radios and at least tell their staff that it's not the same thing as XM or Sirius, which is more than Best Buy (until last month) could claim.

But yeah, the gold plated connectors at 1200% markup are pretty inexcusable.

Side note - if you need ethernet cables - go to Costco (online if you have to). Even if you're not a member and you pay the 5% surcharge, Costco still has the cheapest ethernet cables that I can find. I did a lot of digging on this about six months ago for a project that needed about 100 CAT-5 cables of varying lengths.

I've got a GE SR 3 here that pretty much sticks to the calibration on AM and FM. Also have a Grundig S350. Love the digital readout, even though it does tend to drift a tad. It's also single-conversion, so on 630 here in the Philly 'burbs I get an image of WNWR 1540, rather than WMAL in Washington. That's only during the day, as WNWR is a daytimer.

How does that Grundig compare in terms of FM and AM reception to your GE SR 3????

The Grundig seems to be about equal to the SR3 on AM; it is markedly better on FM. I get a clean, solid stereo signal from WRDV 89.3 Hatboro PA which is a low power community supported station. No go with the SR3.Just wish someone would combine the dual conversion of the SR3 with the Grundig digital readout. That would be sweet!
