CC Dayton may have to sell 2 stations

It looks like Clear Channel will have to divest 2 stations in Dayton OH. I wonder which two they will unload if its required by the governmemt?

WDSJ's a cinch but there could be quite a wild card for the other one. Would anyone buy 94.5 as a standalone? Could Cox or Radio One?

From what I understand, Cox is maxed out on ownership allowability in the Dayton market.

WHIO TV, 3 radio stations (4 signals) and the Daily news are all owned by Cox.

106.5 is guaranteed. As for the other one, I would venture to say 94.5 or 103.9.
TUE could still be the dominant rocker if they sold 103.9 off. They could take Mix Adult CHR and move it farther away from Lite if they were to cell 94.5.

I wonder if it will make a difference that CC just paid shy of half a million to upgrade 94.5 to its full 6kW. It would be tough to invest that and then spin it off soon afterward.

My vote goes to Clear Channel selling off 106.5 and 94.5. 103.9 makes too much money to just spin it off. 94.5 and 106.5 are the two stations CC Dayton owns that don't get the best downtown penetration.

There are two other major companies in Dayton...Cox and Radio One. Cox is at its ownership limit. Radio One is awfully close.

I would venture to guess that Radio One would buy 94.5, but the intellectual property of 106.5. Smooth jazz goes to 94.5 and 106.5 gets sold off to another company, which will revert it back to a station serving the upper Miami Valley.

It will be interesting to see what happens, but I have a feeling if such a deal goes down, Dayton radio has the potential to get VERY stale over the next several years (RE: the Cincinnati deals between Radio One, Cumulus, and Entercom).

If I were Radio One, I'd take 94.5 out so that WGTZ at WDHT could instantly grab 3-6 more shares per daypart. That would put Z back up as a competitor. Then position 94.5 to snag a few shares from Lite or Mix, or maybe K99.

But it won't be because of "downtown penetration." Such a small percentage of the metro's population lives or works or even visits downtown. The money is in reaching to the other cities surrounding, like centerville or fairborn, where most of the population lives and works. Besides that, 94.5 reaches as far south as Mason now thanks to the upgraded signal. There aren't any problems downtown anymore.

OK..Radio One buys 94.5 and then sells 101.7, which doesn't fit their goals anyway. EMF or someone who will lease to EMF for another K-Love repeater buys 101.7.

WIZE is on AM. Clear Channel will be 2 FM's over the cap. Divesting an AM will not solve that problem.

I know. Didn't read that long list and Bob didn't mention AM or FM in his opening comment. My mistake. Merry Christmas.

Brian,

I didn't mean my comment in the manner in which you took it. I was just trying to inform you of the situation. I certainly understand a lot of people haven't taken the time to read the release and some may not even know how to get access to it. Anyway, thanks for the warm holiday wishes! I wish the same for you and yours!

My quick replies tend to be a bit too terse and mistaken for angry. I appreciated your correction Kent. Not reading the list, I'd missed that CC will need to sell in Lexington too.

WIZE is a tombstone to what it formerly was.Rebroadcasting WONE for those who can't pick it up outside its direction pattern just doesn't sound right. Was purchased after Staggs threw in the towel when he aired adult standards as WONE did at the time. Sell it to Urban Light who operates WULM there if they have the bucks...and air Radio Disney or soul gospel or "The Touch". 106.5 in Greenville would be missed for its jazz if it was sold. 99.9 can be sold off to Radio Maria who has been looking for a frequency in Dayton from the get go. They have 88.7 in Anna with a rented tower in Botkins (reaching up to Wapak, St. Marys and Lima) while they get established but fades out south of Troy.

Does anyone know the current status of WEEC? With their current agreement with WFCJ, I would suspect WEEC move to a music format. If ULM were to buy WIZE from CC, I would probably wait to see what WEEC does before making any format decisions on the station.

Doesn't Lite 99.9 bill extremely well? I doubt that CC lets go of that station, or Mix and TUE for that matter. They're constantly near the top of the ratings.

Will guarantee ULM is not buying WIZE. Doubt they'll go anywhere, it'll probably stay a relay to cover some gaps in WONE's signal. No doubt Lite, Mix and TUE will stay with CC...most likely candidates for sale are WDSJ and Channel 945.
