CC Debuts Dance Station in Boston

Interesting flip. Maybe the rollout started in Boston and who knows comes also to NYC. EDM get a change on FM radio...cue to Tony Santiago ;)

Well, CC does not have an obvious candidate in NYC with which to try this format. I doubt they would flip Power to Dance. It will be interesting to see where else CC debuts this format. I am guessing that Boston is the first market; they flipped a Jack-like station branded "the Harbor" to the new format. One other market in which the possibility exists is Miami. There is a Jack-like station there (branded "She," a name with market Heritage), and there is definitely a market for Dance in Miami.

I'll keep it brief.

I am VERY happy for Boston! They definitely deserve a dance station like this. We do have a New England Chapter of the NYDMC and we are in full support.

Let's see how the numbers go. I know that has been a constant argument regarding other cities in the past, including NYC. Otherwise, congratulations :)

I'll echo what I said in the Boston board: while I still miss WFNX, it's great to see Clear Channel do something different with that frequency, and I hope it succeeds.

But no, unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a place for Clear Channel to put this format. Considering how successful KTU is, I don't see them tweaking it back towards pure dance anytime too soon. Z100, Lite FM, and Q104.3 definitely aren't going anywhere, nor should they. That leaves Power 105.1, which I gather is mainly still around in order to keep Hot 97 from dominating the ratings. There's also the question of whether a separate "dance" station would eat too much into KTU's ratings. But then again, CC doesn't seem to be concerned about KTU's effect on Z100's ratings, and KTU really has more in common with Z than it would with an "Evolution" type station.

If anything, I could see this giving CBS an incentive to turn 92.3 Now into a straight-up dance station. They don't have much to lose, ratings-wise. But we'll see what happens.

I'm hoping Alternative gets another chance myself (New Rock 101.9's ratings were promising), but I also think Dance is a format worth looking into. And I'll say it again: despite what others claim, there's no station in NYC that serves the needs that a dance music station would serve. Urban stations have little if anything in common with a station like Evolution, and there would only be some slight overlap with KTU/Now/Z. You could argue about how viable the format is - it's tough to say for sure - but any argument saying that we already have the format in NYC is simply untrue.

Not a viable format at all. NYC is saturated with Urban formatted stations there's no Rock here or country. I'm hoping for Rock.

You're biased.

At least I can support a country or alternative station if it happened here and wish you guys well. How soon we forget how I felt for you guys when you lost 101.9.......

I do agree with you. 'KTU is a successful station with the format they have. I cannot see CC blowing it up to accommodate edgier dance, nor blow up another one of CC's properties because of 'KTU and Z-100's importance in the cluster.

92.3 Now going dance would make sense. They're really halfway there anyway and if they can't beat Z-100 with their format, then go a different direction. If not Now, then 93.1 WPAT. And looking at past history, Spanish Broadcasting System had run English oriented dance stations in the past so that could work for them.

Again...don't lose focus. KTU isn't going anywhere. It is hugely successful by any measure. To throw that away for, at best, a highly speculative format, would be nuts. The NY Clear Channel cluster is performing well. Why mess with it??

Boston is a different story. Dance could make a good flanker to Kiss and Jammin. CC has nothing to lose here, especially when you consider the anticipated changes at 96.9.

Almost forgot about 93.1. That would be a great idea for the reason you mentioned, plus from what I've gathered there's already some built in compatibility there. If we could have Dance on 93.1, Country on 94.7, and Alternative on 92.3 (preferably with a different name and approach from K-Rock), I think we'd have a well-rounded radio dial. Not sure how likely that last option would be, of course.

This is great news and a huge improvement over the trash that was on that station the last 6 months.
At the very least it makes EDM seem viable as a major market format. EDM has close ties with alternative music, and brings 101.7 Boston much closer once again to FNX.

Keep in mind that "viable" has a different meaning here: that station is a Class A FM with very limited coverage. The usable signal covers less than 40% of the market population.

And they did so badly with dance that they had to sell the station.

I'm biased? No, look at the reality how many stations in this market are urban leaning?
1. Power 105.1
2. Hot 97
3. Z-100
4. KTU
5. Now FM
6. BLS
How many CHRs do we have in this market?
1. Z-100 (CC)
2. Now (CBS)
3. KTU (ALSO owned by CC-who was more successful first KTU or Z? Z. Get rid of KTU)
4. PLJ (Certain extent)
5. Fresh (Certain Extent)
A/Cs?
1. Fresh
2. Lite
Radio:
Any mainstream rock/modern rock outlets? None
Any country outlet? None
But in NYC we got a ton of stations playing the same music you wanna hear that like that Justin Bieber song for the 50th time today, just turn to 85% of the stations and you'll hear it within 5 seconds of each other! Listener: Oh boy just what I wanted to hear that Justin Bieber song for the 12th time this hour!

By your logic, we shouldn't have an Alternative station because we can hear Gotye, Fun, The Lumineers, Foster The People, and Neon Trees played heavily on CHR and Hot AC stations. Or a Country station, because Taylor Swift is all over the radio. Again, a dance music station would have only a small amount of overlap with CHR, and pretty much no overlap with Urban.

Oh Yes! KPTI/San Francisco. Still ratings challenged as a Top 40/CHR KREV and still trailing Rhythmic Top 40 KYLD and Top 40/CHR KMVQ after three years.

At this point I welcome this station to even be on a HD2 channel, sure as hell would be a huge improvement then the crap that is currently on 103.5 HD2 or Z 100 HD2 for that matter.
