CC drops "La Precisosa" in DFW...Houston impact?

Lots of chatter on the DFW board about Clear Channel dumping the "La Preciosa" format on KEGL. Currently running Christmas music; a new format will be launched after the holidays.

I know Mega 101 has made some major changes recently, but you gotta wonder about CC's plans for Hispanic targeted format(s) in Houston, if there are any.

KLOL has KTRH on its HD2 channel. I've always wondered about their decision to put it there. It just seems more logical to me that it would have ended up on KKRW or KODA.

Especially after the main channel of KZPS changed places with its HD2, you've gotta wonder. Moving heritage AM talk outlets to FM is a growing trend.

Not to those who know the history of KLOL and KTRH (KLOL was originally KTRH-FM and they were always sold together even after 101.1 became KLOL) But then CC never makes a bright decision...(wonder if Ken Lay was a consultant for them?? Oh thats right, he didnt commit a crime....well according to his widow anyway...did anyone check for poison in his dinner, I wonder? I dont care who ya are, thats funny right there :)

I'll withhold (sp) my judgement until the expert chimes in on this.

Señor Gleason, you have the mike.

This is all speculation, but I would have to say that Clear Channel no longer has an Hispanic Initiative with a mission of converting stations to Spanish. What they no have is an area of opportunity to do Spanish where it maeks sense in the market and where the competition is not extreme.

An example of the opportunites would be the conversion of WRLX in the Palm Beaches to Spanish announced htis week. The market has no real competiton, and a sales force that is not experienced in Spanish can definitely include Hispanic audiences in a spectrum buy effectively.

In Dallas, the moment KEGL got traction, it got whacked by Univision who, with more experience, made sales and programming rather costly and difficult for Clear. So in that market, where they did not have exclusivity or experience in Spannish langauge radio, they announced that they were getting out of Spanish language altogether. So much for major market initiatives.

In another case this week, they took Spanish off the FM of the simulcast in Aggieland and left it only on the limited coverage AM. Still an opportunity, but a minor one.

I think we will see future ocnversions to Spanish when it makes sense and fits with the competiton in the market and the cluster strategy. But we will not see a big push to be in all the major Hispanic markets. And they will continue to play "The Grinch that Stole Christmas" in the board meetings to set the mood; the movie will be edited to end on a foul note.

A minor correction: Clear Channel still has La Preciosa 103.1 in College Station. You are thinking of KZTR 101.9, which dropped the simulcast with KTAM 1240 and is now running a CHR/Rhythmic format as The Beat. This station is owned by Equicom/Brazos Valley.

Interestingly, Clear Channel is the one who blew up Urban on V103 to bring Spanish to the market.

Thanks for clarification. One of the online trades said Precisoa had left FM in Aggieland. So what was the format on 101.9?

101.9 was a simulcast of Radio Alegria, which aired on KTAM 1240. As I understand, KTAM was regional Mexican.

Yes 101.9 was a Simulcast of 1240 RAdio Alegria but it wasnt s straight regional mexican station. I t was more like an all request station, that played regaton, cumbias, spanish rock, pop, anything people requested they played.

Mr. Gleason. ClearChannel is still running La Preciosa in Bryan TX. over at KVJM 103.1. The sound process is awful by the way. I guess you can still say it is a step down (or it has been) since the signal is full of static. KLTN has it cornered for now over in Hearne.

KZTR 101.9 has recently changed to "101.9 The Beat" a Rythmic/R&B/Dance. Nice station. Radio Alegria is a straight Regional Mexican. Reggeaton was played like once a day and it was only used as a background for the DJ's. That station is a mess. The DJ's are always cranky and very rude to their listeners when they are put on the air. Clear Channel's La Preciosa is great at night because it is local and they play current Regional Mexican / Spanish Contemporary music. It is very noticable when they go satellite and from there on, the station turns into a spanish iPod zombie that is little exciting. What a mess of a duo of spanish stations (KVJM CC and KTAM Brazos ). These stations have a lot to work with, but so little effort is put into their stations. Good thing KLTN and KLQB are listenable in the area (with a good receiver of course).

Mega 101 is doing too well to change. They have been beating KLTN and KOVE in the recent weekly PPM numbers.
Don't expect it to change formats anytime soon. Dallas changing format is absolutely seperate than Houston.
Mega 101 has a bright future ahead of it...La Presiosa is DEAD. Check out the Dallas Arbitron #'s.

In the RGV, CC dropped La Preciosa on 1700 AM in favor of satellite oldies, which is strange considering CC has live oldies on 105.5 FM and 1700 was once a simulcast. This sounds like something temporary.

Yes Mega is doing pretty good, Im not a straight fan of none regional mexican or tejano music obviously but I am starting to listen to it especially now that they are playing lost of Christmas music. Its like listening to a spanish sunny 99.1.
