CC drops Paul Harvey to end of dial

The bean counters at Clear Channel have done it again. A few years ago they pushed Paul Harvey from Miss 103 to Q105. I know some people who had to go listen on the Net when that happened because the Kosciusko signal is so bad in parts of Jackson. Now they have moved it to 1590 at the right end of the dial. The signal is better, but I wonder what the Paul Harvey demo will think about another move. Is he no longer gained advertisers in Jack-town?

I can remember Paul on WABG, Greenwood. Mississippi in 1955. That was a LONG time ago...This is 2007, and there is no replacement apparent...so I think many stations are preparing for the demise of this long running program. Nuff' said....JBI

A couple of years back, a speaker at Ad Fed tossed out the question of who in the Disney Corporation earned the biggest yearly paycheck. Of course, the immediate thought was maybe the chairman, CEO, maybe some "star" or producer; but the answer was Paul Harvey! On his birthday in September, 89 years old, it was noted that ABC gave him at 10-year contract when he was 81. At one time had a "successor" had been chosen, but Paul outlived him! According to the NPR story from September, Paul generates about 60% of the revenue for ABC radio networks.

To affiliate with Paul Harvey, a station MUST also be an ABC Entertainment Network affiliate. That affiliation brings with it a ton of non pre-emptable network commercial "must-play" inventory, and yes there is network compensation to the station, but at a fraction of what that inventory could be sold for locally.

With the strict "Less Is More" inventory limits placed on all CC stations, there comes a point of diminishing returns in a situation like this....and I would suggest that the ABC inventory payments became far less valuable to CC than they could sell the avails for locally on WQJQ. And a "Paul Harvey Sponsorship" couldn't make up the difference. But, it's safe to assume there is plenty of inventory available on 1590.

And then of course, there is the whole question of Paul's continuing ability to perform. It all factors in together. MISS 103's ratings never skipped a beat when Paul moved to Q105. And Q's ratings never benefitted from Paul either.

Is he still being heard on WJDX also? Way back in the 70's he was on WSLI.

Yes, and three times a day (7:30A, 2p and 3p) and 11a on Saturdays. I don't understand why CC put him on a sports station, considering that they do have a news station in town.

I don't know if this is still the plan, but once upon a time, ABC put out a press release that Fred Thompson had been selected as the heir-apparent to the Harvey throne. Earlier this year, Paul took an extended break, and Fred filled in for 15 years. Actually it was only like a week, but it felt like 15 years. It was an audio train wreck of the highest caliber. You almost have to hope he does well in the Presidential election, because if Fred Thompson News And Comments is in the future, ABC is in BIIIIIIIIG trouble!

It has always been a mystery to me why Paul Jr. hasn't handled the sub slots, and why isn't he the obvious heir apparent?
