CC-Hartford Prediction

Not only will Clear Channel yank rights to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity away from WTIC at some point, but they've already got their morning man for "Rush Radio Hartford" in place - the available Jim Vicevich.

Question is, which FM station in the cluster do you blow up?

They won't have to. I believe Tom Taylor's TRI newsletter mentioned a couple of days ago that CC is moving the WPKX/97.9 transmitter closer to Hartford, effectively making it a Hartford signal. It will have a null to the southeast to protect WCTY/Norwich. My guess is once the transmitter is set, they'll replace the country with Beck, Rush, Hannity & Noory. They could go with Vicevich in the morning, or they could pipe in Jeff Katz, who's doing mornings at Rush Radio 1200 in Boston. That would obviously leave a bunch of holes in the schedule on several area frequencies, particularly WTIC.

I don't agree with Rush Radio, but if that's the plan that's the plan. They should put RUSH RADIO on 92.5 and leave 97.9 Country. KIX is a better Country Station.

That would make sense, if they did not care about blowing up WELI in New Haven. But I would imagine the income WELI brings in as a syndicated talk station is significantly more than the revenue another format would produce.

92.5 has a much better signal. Why on earth would you kill one of the highest billing CC stations in the market for some conservative talk "experiment"?

Because KIX 97.9 is a better station. That's why. A lot of people thing so too. If there was another Country Station in Hartford Country 92.5 would get its clock cleaned. Also I'm friends with the manager of Illusions Dance Club in Wolcott and she was telling me last night that she and her friends agree that if they had a signal that reached Hartford KICKS 105.5 in Danbury could give Country 92.5 a run for is money.

No way in Hell that happens. It doesn't make sense. As far as ratings and revenue go, 92.5 is a gold mine. And, 97.9 isn't (yet). Why flip your gold mine, lose parts of that audience, and give up that revenue? Certainly not because you personally think that the music is better on 97.9 - a station that was programmed to a different market. Not happening.....

The Vicevich thing is interesting, he's a pretty decent fit for a "Rush Radio" format. But let's not jump to conclusions just yet - there are still a couple of other potential formats that could be installed on 97.9. I am sure that Clear Channel is studying all the angles right now (including scenarios involving what the FCC will decide on their application).

Oh, that settles it then! ::) ::)

Or why not just move the Kix name to 92.5 wouldn't be a bad idea. As for what CC wants to do with 97.9 if and when it moves to Hartford, CT should be a we will see. How is the Rush Radio doing in other markets?

One reason (with two parts): Because the Kix name has no brand equity in the market and the "Country 92.5" brand has been very successful. Put in simplest terms.....you don't mess with success. Remember, Kix had only a fraction of the audience that 92.5 has. That's why Clear Channel is moving the signal from the Springfield market to Hartford - because they saw more potential in CT, not because they think that the music or positioning at 97.9 is somehow better than what they're doing with WWYZ. They're moving the signal into the market and flipping to a different format as if it was a brand new radio station. Don't expect ANY of the elements of Kix to make the move.

Now, perhaps some of the Kix elements could end up staying in Springfield. Perhaps a flip of WRNX to country? At last check, WPKX had more than twice the listenership of WRNX.

I'm not for FM talkradio or sports fm either to that matter, keep them on AM band.I would like to see Country 92.5 get some competion in the listening area.I'm tired of the short playlist. We need a full power station here that plays a variety of country tunes ,not all new country only.back to the topic on talk radio,I would like to hear Coast to Coast AM on FM band.

Maybe 104.1 could be flip to country if the rock format doesn't start picking up.

As for CC their best station in the market is Country and worst is River.

That will be great, It would bring back memories of WIOF back in the 70's.

WWYZ may be CCs highest rated station, but their processing sucks. That's what I meant when I said I think KIX is a much better station.

Clear Channel also has two country stations in the Fort Myers, FL area, ironically one of them being "Kix Country 92.9" licensed to Charlotte Harbor/Punta Gorda (the other being "Cat Country 100").

Look, the bottom line is this.

979 moves to Hartford (the application will be approved, CC has some of the best consulting engineers in the biz, they WILL make it happen one way or another). Format changes. I think most likely Talk, but it could be something else. It won't stay country.

KIX stays in Springfield. Either on 100.9 or maybe another way (move an allocation from somewhere else into Springfield, or move a translator into it, and do a HD2 on it...)

CC doesn't mess with 92.5. RedWolf or CBS doesn't launch a second country station in Hartford to go fill a gap that could be missing in Springfield. Outside of 97.9, the market remains very much status quo for the big FM signals.

And FWIW, Springfield might lose Kix, but Country 92.5 comes in perfectly fine throughout the Springfield area.
Hampshire county residents can also get a decent signal from 95.3 in Greenfield. So it is not like there will be a lack of Country in the Springfield area. I may personally hate the loss of Kix, I think it's a good move on CC's part.

Wait until it is reported that WTIC loses its rights to Rush and Hannity. Then and only then will the writing be on the wall for "Rush Radio 97.9".

Charlotte County is a different market than Fort Myers-Naples. While Kix Country can be heard quite well in Fort Myers proper, it is a tough catch in the Naples area.
