So much for the reputation as Rochester's "News Leader" especially when you get rid of a third of your on-air staff. Susan Ashline had been with WHAM for a number of years, while Rob Jason was just recently hired.
And what is Lonsberry going to do without a producer?

Of course the radio station always has WHAM TV to back them up which I think will eventually happen, if it hasn't already. Management's philosophy might be why keep radio people employed when TV reporters can do double-duty? And who knows maybe the WHAM Five O’clock news hour on 1180 will consist of just simulcasting Channel 13 news.

Sounds like more coast to coast programming and less local content is on the table. Sad, really.

Apparently this is yet another application of Cheap Channel's "less is more" policy.[/Mike]

Nothing like a complimentary holiday copy of 'The Clear Channel Communications Home Game'.

Comes complete with a reduced number of playing pieces and a "get out of local programming free" card....

Meanwhile, Lowry and Family make billions.

Here's what the Wall Street Journal reported in yesterday's (10-30-06) edition:

By SARAH MCBRIDE and DENNIS K. BERMAN
October 30, 2006 (Page A3)

Clear Channel Communications Inc.'s founding Mays clan stands to reap more than $1.1 billion, plus an estimated $80 million or more in severance compensation, if the winning bidder in an auction for the radio titan asks the family to leave the company. But the family members could make out better if new owners ask them to stick around and reward them with a bigger equity stake.

Billion, that's 1 followed by nine zeros. Plus an estimated $80 million in severance. Nice work if you can get it. You can bet the folks at Emmis, CBS and Citadel are looking at this and taking notes.

Still think the public owns the airwaves?

The biggest insult to the industry would be for either one of those folks to be inducted into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame. Let them take their billions, buy an island, and just go away. Meanwhile sell their stations to local groups who might be able to salvage radio before it is totally destroyed.
