This is taken directly from the Wikipedia entry on WRDU-FM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRDU-FM
):

On Friday, October 6, 2006, It appeared Clear Channel had changed the station's format to country. The station is temporarily known as "106.1 The Rooster". Syndicated duo John Boy and Billy have returned to the Raleigh-Durham market and are being promoted as soon to be on the new station, however they will in fact turn up on sister station WRVA 100.7 "The River".The temporary switch to the country format is what is called "stunting". Clear Channel last stunted in the Raleigh-Durham market during the format change of WTRG-FM Oldies 100.7 to "The River." 106.1 WRDU'S New format is set to debut on Monday October 9th featuring Whoopi Goldberg on morning drive and a mix of rythmic and CHR music. 100.7 will soon receive the call letters WRDU and will pick up where they left off on the 106.1 frequency with former 106.1 afternoon man Bob "The Blade" doing afternoons. A massive promotion by 100.7 WRDU will involve the air staff thanking listeners for "bringing the station back", of course that's all smoke and mirrors since the station really never left , it was just moved to a better signal.

Is this itself a smoke screen, or did the company play its hand too early?

Why not just flip 100.7 to Rythmic AC? That would be one stupid move...however, they did "The Bull" on 100.7 over a weekend, so why not do it on 106.1. I doubt, however that RDU would come back on 100.7.

Anyone could edit Wikipedia pages. It's so easy, even a caveman can do it!

Don't you think if they "moved" RDU to 100.7, they'd simulcast on both stations for awhile, like they did in Philadelphia?

Surely this Wikipedia quote can't be true! I had a hard time following the quote, so I know listeners will have a hard time figuring it all out. That is just too weird to be true. It takes years to build a station identity and as much as those of us in radio like to believe that the listeners know exactly what's going on, the fact of the matter is a huge number of them don't. I think this would be a very confusing move.

So it's "wierd" and "confusing"? Agreed. But does that mean that Clear Channel will suddenly come to their senses and start doing radio the way it's supposed to be done? I doubt it.

That having been said, any knowing person will take the Wikipedia entry with a grain of salt. A very interesting grain of salt...

It seems that what is more likely to happen is:

106.1 - The Rooster (Country)

100.7 - The River (Classic Rock): CC would have had to file with the FCC for a call letter change on any frequency, and that means we would know about it already.

93.3 - Movin' (Rythmic AC): Whoopi and the gang come in when Christmas music goes away.

CC operates strictly as a business. They really have little choice. When you consider the outrageous prices they paid for some of these stations, and the ridiculous amount of revenue it takes just to service that debt, it is easier to understand why they act quickly to shore up an underperforming property. That is likely the reason CC is starting to sell off some of the smaller markets- the stockholders are getting restless.

And what about this interesting development? There is a 106.1 The Rooster website, but its web address takes you to QDR's website. See for yourselves:

Like Frasier said earlier, anybody can edit Wiki pages, so before you bet next months pay on it, remember that some schlep with one finger in their - errr - nose - and the other on the keyboard may have posted that for spits and giggles. ::)

They'd better not mess with my boy Brother Bill and Aunt Eloise Louise

Don't look now, but this thread is featured on the main page.... hence the 1819 looks.

I guess they do it automatically, without looking at the content.

LOL!

So, maybe we should try to stick to the subject of the thread rather than hijacking it for personal and corporate attacks!

WTQR should approach the new competitor as a wake up call. Its a good time to review everything they do - music choices, rotations, shuffle the library, adjust the clocks, positioning, production values, personalities, visibility, commercial production values, the morning show, services in all dayparts - bottom line is a serious self examination!

Don't ignore them, take them seriously internally, but don't acknowledge them publicly.

exactly. No need for knee jerking...but agood hard look in the mirror is in order

I worked for a GM once who made me do a "state of the station" analisys every year - no matter what the competition was doing. We looked at everything - and tried to be as critical as possible. PDs really need to look at their own product and ask "if I was cross town, what weakness would I be able to exploit?" Everybody has one!! Then fight for a solution!

I enjoy country music as good as anybody else,I was very upset when I turned it to 106.1 WRDU one day and didn't hear my favorite classic rock. Everybody I know listens to Classic rock and 106.1 WRDU has been North Carolina's favorite station for the classics such as LYNRD SKYNARD and led zepplin, other stations dont play enough of it. WRDU played music that you just cant hear anymore and it will never go out of style down south. I cant imagine a friday or a saturday night without 106.1 WRDU. How can you change it to anything else but classic rock? Its just not the same comming from 100.7 The River. WRDU was dedicated to the good stuff. Please hurry and and stop stunting and put classic Rock back on 106.1 RDU THE HOME OF CLASSIC ROCK

A-ha! So THAT'S why they've been playing 5 times as many of their records!
