CC/Shreveport SOLD!

Let's hope GAP brings more localism to all these radio stations.

Gap actually just got into the radio business this year with it's first and up until now only purchase being Thibodaux station KTIB am 640.

Haven't heard any positives or negatives yet.. but the man has done what he said he would do at KTIB and that was return it to the air with oldies/news talk format.. with the morning show actually being locally based.

RFLA

RFLA and everyone else,
I had heard that GAP (owned by George Laughlin of Dallas) bought about 50 radio stations from Clear Channel in the Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana areas. Apparently the manager at KTIB said so on the air today.
I obviously can't speak about the other stations since I'm not in their listening range, but right now KTIB still has some annoying pops and static "surges" throughout the day and night and it's been going on for almost six weeks. They keep saying it'll be fixed "in a couple of weeks" but after awhile the management sounds just like they did before the shut down (which is partially true because it's the same G.M. from the shut down). I hope Mr. Laughlin does get KTIB in running shape, assuming he is aware of the problems?

AMEN TO THE PROBLEMS OF KTIB....

BUT, WONDER HOW RFLA WILL DEFEND IT....

I won't defend it... I've heard the pops and squeaks too.. more in the daytime than at night. I'm not connected with the station but with Gap at least bringing the station on the air compared to having possible sat fed gospel 24/7 (Cajun radio actually promised local and gospel, but when all of their other stations are sat fed, it was a wonder how long until it was going to happen) or a lost of the license.. I say it's a aim in the right direction... There was some major issues at the transmitter site from what I understand before the sale and apparently it hasn't been fixed yet (Is George Laughlin in the loop on it, I don't know... This is one of the issues with distant ownership)

The original post concerned how GAP would be by taking over the clear channel cluster in Shreveport. Now with the amount of stations they are buying I can't tell for sure, but I was just posting what he did with his first purchase which was better than the alternatives that was produced while KTIB was for sale. (Considering one of the former owners didn't really advertise the fact it was for sale locally until it was announced in the local media about how no one locally wanted to buy it)

Shreveport will be GAP's biggest market, so you'd think whatever changes or tweaks the new company wants to make, overall, you'll see at GAP first. But I heard it's business-as-usual there, with everyday biz and with hiring.

WILL be until CC unloads more markets...I have heard rumors that anything below market 75 will go...eventually...
so if thats the case, Shreveport wont be the biggest market owned by GAP.

A bit off the current subject, but may be of interest, and just down I-20 + it's CC! KZPS, a heritage classic rock in Dallas, just changed formats to an Alt-Country/Rock hybrid and they did it without firing all of the staff. Perhaps a sign of change is in the air in corporate radio?!? Word is the playlist is homegrown and evolving.... http://www.kzps.com and of course in the DFW section on this board.

Two stations... KMJJ and KBTT serve the needs of the Hip-Hop community and it's more than enough for a market that size. And, even KDKS & K94.5 play their fair share of it. Shreveport is actually one of the better radio markets, because most of the needs are met. You have good Urban/Urban AC-Blues, Country, AC/Hot AC, Oldies, Rock/Classic Rock. The only thing that's really missing is Smooth Jazz and the market really would not support it.

If I were going to start a new station, or flip a struggling one, I'd go with Urban Oldies, maybe stick a Gospel Block in the Midday, and then put some Smooth Jazz on Saturday or Sunday.

But the market definitely does NOT need anymore Hip-Hop.

I highly agree with snoman on this. Shreveport has a real great share of formats that eventually worked before and still does today. KMJJ and KBTT as snoman stated, serve the needs of the hip-hop community while KDKS and Magic 107 serve in the adult urban for the over 30 crowd. There was a time when I was working at KDKS over 12 years ago that they used to have a personality who happen to be a musician named Dorsey Summerfield who had a jazz show on Sunday afternoons. Very refreshing programming in those days.

But back to the subject at hand. You already have your stations playing hip-hop, urban, top 40, country, AC hot AC and gospel. Granted there was a need for a smooth jazz station, but I think that has already been once upon a time attempted.
