CC Syracuse The Day After

Sources say that it was no biggie.Joel handled everything personally and saved all of the key players.Morale is back to normal.
Much ado about nothing.

I suppose "much ado about nothing" is right, for Syracuse anyway. It's never "fun" to see people lose their jobs, but as the national trades reported, it's all about the numbers.

I can't imagine Lerch's show was pulling in a ton of money. Things might be different if Clear Channel still held the live broadcast rights to SU sports, but Lerch wasn't even the main host of WSYR's wannabe pre-game coverage -- Joe Galuski is! And aside from SU sports... the Crunch are OK depending on the season, and the Chiefs are just kind of "there." Not really the kind of town that demands a ton of local sports talk. Anyone can talk about national sports, so why not just let Fox Sports take another 3 hours? The innocent casualty from WHEN is producer Ty Doyle, who I don't know well, but he's a relatively young guy... I can't imagine he was commanding a giant salary.

The other notable name crossed off the payroll list was Carole Fargo. I'm told she was pulling down a pretty big buck to basically hand her work off to other people. Kinda tough to justify that big paycheck following the first year in a long time without a BJAM or any other comparable major-level event.

As for sales people... it's been said all over the place: kind of shocking that Clear Channel cut off so many sources of intake. Sales people make commission... so the ones who aren't bringing in that much still aren't taking home that much. What's the harm? It should be up to each GM and/or SM to decide which salespeople are worth keeping and which can be tossed... just like they normally do. Every other radio company in town is always looking for salespeople, and CC's throwaways will hopefully become someone else's treasure.

I just hope this is it... though many websites I've checked seem to indicate there may be more cuts coming in the next few weeks.

Favorites were saved, especially the long-term sales folks. But he had to find a pocket of money to save so out goes big bucks Promotions Director. Newbies in sales were let go to save part-time sales people and other veterans that put up with the crap.

I thought CC made a ton of money on that domain scam .cc years ago...."it's going to be the next big thing..." what a joke. The best part is Mays family says they are going to be "more innovative". Keep taking those $25 rates from national accounts so you can keep the business. Now that's innovative!

More innovative = more voicetracking, more syndication. Maybe not immediately, but eventually. When the next quarter rolls around and the financials are still looking bad... or when those on-air "favorites" finally leave on their own... you can bet most of them will be NOT be replaced by someone comparable.

Some hypotheticals:

WSYR: Galuski retires... OK, so Reith moves to mornings. Post openings to search for a new afternoon talker? Nope, sign up someone off the bird.
WYYY: If Dollar Bill or Kathy Rowe leave, they'll just let the morning show go solo. Middays are already voicetracked. Afternoon guy is an out-of-town voicetracker and evenings are already syndicated.
WWHT: Another station that could easily be tracked anytime after morning drive (if it isn't already).
WWDG: Morning is the only local shift... hopefully live for the sake of current local information. Rest of the day is voicetracked/syndicated.
WPHR: Mornings are syndicated. The rest doesn't matter, similar to WWDG.
WHEN: The only local full-time air staff they had was axed on Tuesday. Fox Sports around the clock. RIP.
WBBS: The only station where all 3 primary dayparts are hosted by local jocks, even though middays (and maybe even afternoons) are tracked. Also the only station where a serious search would be required whenever Tom/Ron & Becky finally quit or get fired. Not sure if you could simply throw Amber & Rich together and expect it to work. But if you could, that means you could replace middays and PM with out-of-town voicetrackers who would cost a lot less than hiring 2 new local people.

I guess after you look at it station-by-station... Syracuse didn't have many on-air layoffs because there's hardly anyone left TO layoff!

This is a request for clearchannel to syndicate Brother Wease. He's fun to listen to and I can only hear the show on the internet out here in Sylvan Beach.

Wasn't that tried once before? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was done, but the results were only so-so.

Again....Pleeeze put Brother Wease on one of the local Clearchannel stations, he's funny.

So, you're saying that he's better than any local talent they could recruit, huh?

*Lauging* ;D Can you name anyone better that is local? Put Wease on the Deruyter station out here with us reds. Were talking about a show that is already Local. Everyone knows where Canandagua and D'town Rochester is. Listening right now and this show is very funny for us old farts. Belly laughed many times.

Yeah, I guess you're right. Syndicating Wease is bound to be more entertaining that putting on some local retread or never-was that thinks that they've got the chops to do an entertaining morning show day after day.

Just which Clear Channel station do you envision as a home for Wease in Syracuse?

DE-motion is the new DE-motivaor

Apparently DE-motion is the new MO-tivator.
1)Joel-MAJOR pay cut(dictated by corporate)Now, directly, in charge of all CC Syracuse sales.
2)DOS-Knocked down to just a sales manager and takes a "healthy" pay cut
3)WSYR Sales Manager-Knocked down to a glorified rep with "Major" pay adjustments
So much for the sales department all driving gold Mercedes!

So being "directly in charge of CC Syracuse Sales" does that mean taking full responsibility for what the team delivers? That finally he is accountable and that his head will roll subject to revenue results? Talk about skating for all these years. You mean he has to, work? Can't wait to hear about sales meetings? Motivate me, motivate me!! Yes! I won't take a vacation this year unless I make my goal! Do it! Do it! Word is His Girl Friday took a cut.

So $25 national account rates. CC always the leader in rate integrity. No we don't use ratings
here. And our relationship with the empty mall that's building outside the window...the promise for the future. I have to go. I have to log into my www.scam.cc to check on the latest news.

To the last posters comment:"Girl Friday" is on the pavement with her severance. This could present "interesting" HR aspects down the road that one has to wonder if Corporate knows anything about?

Any one of them, am or fm. Stern took all the listeners with a little 95.7. Dont get me wrong either, Galuski is a fine broadcaster. So is Ted Long and there are some fine, not-washed-up broadcasters floating around this town. But I would put my money on Brother Wease finally coming to the 'cuse. Us old rockers all know of him and hes a riot. A quick bump of promotion on one of the TV stations for a week or so and youve got a winner. Not national, not local, but regional. Its an answer and a good Idea.

An ex-CC'er backed this up for me tonight. Thirteen gone total plus the demotions (this person said two sales managers are now account reps).

If salespeople are on salary why run so hard to make a sale? No incentive. So salaried salespeople had some influence on the money coming in. Why make a cold call, I'm on salary! Just write up those fax orders and not generate new business...that's disaster.

Are the majority of sales staffs on salary? If so, all that commission money went somewhere.

This is funny, being in the middle of an important "Sales" subject. I feel like a canary in a coal mine. I'm not singing and all of the men around me are so loud they dont notice.

...anyway everyones getting a paycut, Joel still wont be turning in his beer cans for gas money. They will all bounce back with the economy.

Pleeeeze put Wease on one of the CC stations in Syr. AM or FM, doesnt matter.

Sounds like somebody's buckin' for a "sidekick" gig...

True...were all makin' a livin'
It's more the side job than it would be talking on the air, I enjoy listening. I was Dave Laird and Ted Longs board op when they were on a remote. Also ran the board for the Mets games on WNDR when they were winning. Liked it a lot. I could handle listening to the Wease show for 4 hours. How about WHEN? The Wease Show is heavy into sports.
