CC Utica/Rome No More

At first I didn't know what to think about all of this.I had read on several boards about how the staff at WOUR had been fired, then found out that Jerry,Allison and most of the CC staff took severance packages.Genesee Joe stayed and he's still on the air in his usual time slot.I kind of like the new WOUR,at first I was kind of skeptical, but they're getting better everyday and I'm sure once this all settles people won't even care about all of the "poltics" involved with this deal.

I do feel bad for them, especially since they've been on the air for such a long time, and at that age, you're not really expecting to suddenly change careers. Hopefully they can pick up some agency voicework, something in PR, or maybe teaching at HCCC. Or as someone suggested, maybe WXUR will bulk up and attempt to take on WOUR. There's no better way to take on a heritage station than to steal all of its talent! Of course, this assumes they aren't stuck waiting out non-compete clauses like Keeler had to when he was fired by Galaxy. And it assumes WXUR can find a way to offer these folks enough cash to make it worth their while.

Agency voicework, unless it's AFTRA or SAG in a top twenty market, doesn't pay the mortgage or the kids' tuition, room and board. The PR field is glutted with ex-jocks and ex-sales people who've been cut or had their fill. Maybe these guys form an agency (another field as cut throat and glutted as radio, PR and voice overs.) Teaching? Helps if you at least a BA/BS or a Masters degree. Sure, the experience counts for something, but without the sheepskin, it's likely to result in compensation on an adjunct or per class basis.

As to WXUR beefing-up, you guys would know better than I, but from what's been written here, that station runs on a tight (low) budget. And taking on a heritage AOR-Classic Rocker with 50kw is an uphill battle for a 6 kW'er with what appears to be an average signal. I'm just sayin'...

That's probably because he was actually demoted from FT to PT a few years ago. Unless he was re-promoted since then, Ed only has to pay him an hourly wage, no benefits.

For anyone out there who's considering broadcasting right now: All the better reason to go onto a four year school rather than just calling it quits after HCCC. Or better yet, go the 4-year school off the bat if you can. I went to a SUNY school where we had a handful of people transfer in from HCCC or other 2-year schools and none of the transfers graduated "on time" -- usually because of course incompatibilities. The extra 2 years also allow you take a wider variety of courses so you can do more than just jock an airshift or shoot/edit TV news footage. For example, teaching. :)

At least they got severance packages. That's better than you'd see from most other owners in a small market, including Regent, Galaxy or Mindy "tight budget" Barstein at WXUR! And if the amount of severance is tied to the years of service, then Jerry, Alison and Linda Rae should have made out pretty nicely.

From what I hear they weren't offered jobs by Galaxy, only two sales people were guarenteed jobs. The airstaff was given strictly severence, no offer to continue on.

sad to see a once good market going downhill. heres a question just how many HCCC alums are working in radio or tv? I know from my class it a really small number, like 2 or 3.......

I didn't go to HCCC, but I know quite a few people who did. And now that you mention it... yeah, most of those who were in the business have since moved onto other jobs outside of broadcasting.

But, same could be said for a lot of people in this market. It sucks that salaries are so low. If you want to stay in broadcasting, but make a decent living, you have to move far away to a larger city where they offer larger salaries. Unfortunately, that's not always an option for folks who have family ties or other pressing reasons to stay in the area.

I graduated from HCCC a handful of years ago. There are quite a few from our graduating R/TV class that are actively working in the biz. I can think of at least six and those are just the people I was close with. Granted, there are many more who aren't and that is sad indeed. HCCC is great as far as R/TV degrees go, but there isn't a school on earth that can offer an education that compares to actual time working at a real radio or television station. You won't know what it's like until you do it. And college radio doesn't count.

Personally, choosing not to go on for a second two years is one of the best decisions I've ever made. In my case it worked, but generally, broadening your horizons with a bachelors is a very good idea.

By the way, I'd agree that you can't make any really good money in this biz unless you're in a decent market. But I can say from experience that a $19,000 salary goes surprisingly far when you're single and living lean. It's still possible to pay your dues and make ends meet. If you want to graduate and instantly be working in a large market as the next Howard Stern (and plenty at HCCC do) do yourself a favor and find something else to study.

Alright say you slave for "Fred"! You'll end up working ungodly hours with a bunch of morons under a guy from Yonkers who couldn't even get an internship in his home market.

Face it "Fred" you can't make it in NYC! You couldn't even cut it in Albany. You lost the 105.7 signal and sold out to Jesus. Your morning guy went "Salt Lake" and came back home. Noone goes to SLC unless they're very desperate. Some slaves need to come to roost I guess.

Have fun in Utica "Fred".
