CC vs Cox Rock Radio

I live in Ormond and pick up both WJRR in Orlando and WFYV in Jacksonville. I like both but am curious. Their music is essentially the same, I almost wish they would combine their playlists.

JRR was playing more new rock but lately I've been hearing The Who, Bon Jovi, etc...WFYV seems to pound Guns and Roses and their new rock is nothing like what JRR plays.

Who dictates the music, is it a corporate programmer, research, specific to market? Just curious. If you built a radio station that played at least 500-700 new, active and classic rock tunes it would be nice. Just seems both of these stations have the same 200 songs in rotation.

Which is exactly what the consultant wanted ;D
WJRR expanded their playlist to include songs they used to play years ago essentially because they have no real competition. Not to mention they have a few jocks from the old album rock WDIZ days there. You can't really count the automated fossil rock their sister station WTKS plays on weekends and overnights. Most of those songs they won't play. And you can't count WMMO eventhough they added 50 or so more songs ever since the demise of their sister station WHTQ. There are to few of those out there (although they would be dedicated listeners, I would be one of them) that would love a rock station with a deep playlist playing old and new rock that a company would invest in anymore. There are a few of those stations out there still, their mostly ones that have been playing that kind of music for a long time.

Have Most of the Alt Rock Listeners gone on to become Streamies so there just isn't enough of a Younger Demo available to support a Current/Re-Current Based Alt Rock Station or is the Format itself in that much of a Decline???

Non JRR related but I heard "More than a Feeling" on 98Rock in Tampa. Doesn't Tampa already have The Eagle and Q105 spinning that song. Nice to hear stations spinning different songs but I don't think Boston fits on a Active Rocker.

Good question, and while I'm not familiar with the specific situation, the answer tends to be a combination of sources. Certainly, hit songs are hit songs. We know what the hits are, and most listeners want to hear the hits. But what's market-specific is the competition, and how one stations's song list competes with that of another station. There is no one perfect radio station that will fit everyone's musical taste. We are all individuals, and we like different combinations. If you look through personal playlists, you'll sometime see crazy combinations of Michael Bolton on the same iPod with Jason Aldean. It makes no sense. You can't program a radio station that way. So you assume that listeners are going to switch stations to find the mix they want. So if you get tired of the "same 200 song rotation," my suggestion is go outside the box and listen to a different format for a day. I promise you'll hear a whole bunch of songs and artists you've never heard before. What I'm suggesting is listener-based programming, rather than station-based programming. The station comes up with it's list, it's brand, and the listener creates the personalized list they want by pushing a button.

And ya know what's funny...Orlando was one of the hottest rock markets in the country about 10-15 years ago!

There was Real Rock (which was one of the best active rockers on the east coast at the time), O-rock (heavy on the 90' and current rock, Real Radio with an excellent classic alt format, WHTQ, and WMMO.

Its amazing how the public's listening habits completely change in such a short time! At least in Orlando, the demographics haven't changed significantly in that amount of time...that's the only explanation I can come up with.

Radio-X

Those who like to play radio here will tell you that since Orlando has a 40% minority population, they don't like to rock.

Crazy.

So-called "Lite" stations have been playing that track for years - and it doesn't fit on an active rock station, you say?

When's 98 Rock going to flip to Newsradio 97.9 and be done with it?

Biggie, thanks for the update on the JRR playlist. Very interesting, do they really play over 800 songs everyday? Is this a result of the no repeat workday?

Also to someone else's point, why would the Mighty 98 Rock play a lame tune from Boston that every AC, soft rocker is already pounding?!

What's the story on a possible format flip to News Radio 979 in the Bay Area?
