Hi David - um, it's Saturday and that was sarcasm. Kick your "seriousness" meter down a notch.

What's the address for CC SF?

Have a nice weekend.

Yeh, but they also represent radio groups. It's great to be in the center of a huge network as long as you stay clear on who your client is at any particular time. This is similar to the investment banks... they erect some serious "chinese walls" to keep conflicts to a minimum.

Re: CC with a new format-NO WAY

You've all heard of products like Dial, Advil, Crest, Scope and Threa-Flu right? Ok! Now that we have those names recognized as national products, I can say I'm the "REP" for an agency "who yes is a broker" that sells national spots to local groups at wholesale price. When a radio or television group needs to fill space or time, they fill their slot with our spots.

KPIX TV is most known for national spots. Being that they are a cbs affilliate, they must play 00:02.30 (Two Minutes-Thirty seconds) of national spots an hour in order to keep the CBS affiliation. You may remeber that KRON was the Local Affiliate to NBC just a few years ago. Because their local sales staff was selling more local spots than national, that aided in KRON losing the affiliation to NBC hence giving San Jose's KNTV 11 the right to bid for the NTL rights to NBC.

Now we all now another story as to what happen between KRON and NBC. NBC felt it would be in their best interest to allow NBC 11 to be the San Francisco Bay Area Affiliate because they agreed to play 4 1/2 minutes of National spots per hour. By playing 4 1/2 minutes of National spots, NBC 11 was given thousands of dollars to upgrade and cover most of the bay area.

Come on, Gerry. Give us a break. KPIX is owned by CBS. Do you seriously believe that Channel 5 is going to lose its affiliation with the company that OWNS IT if they don't play enough national spots?

Beyond that, anyone with even a basic knowledge of how television networks are run knows that it has more to do with clearing the network's programming. If a local channel decides, for instance, not to run "Desperate Horsethieves," "CSI: Duluth" or some other network show, the network stands to lose even more.

You also only gave examples of what you do with local television stations, but didn't give a single example of what you do with radio stations. (This is a radio board, after all.)

For example, would it be possible for KCBS/740 or KGO/810 to lose their respective affiliations with the CBS and ABC radio networks if they don't run national ads? (Why yes, I am being sarcastic.)

It seems you are not making a distinction between national sales, which is spot sales, and network sales, which is part of a deal to carry a certain quota of minutes.

National spot is sold by the client, by the campaign. No campaign has any relationship with any other.

Network, in radio, is a bulk deal. The station must carry x number of spots in exchange for something of value, which may be revenue or programming. There are many larger market stations that are on nets not for the programs, but the reveneu. Large market affiliates are gneerally compensated, and do not have to carry the shows... just the spots.

National spot is revenue generating only. It is the sale, by a rep with offices across the country, to agency accounts that buy hundreds of stations on a campaign.

I am now inclined to agree with the earlier poster who said Gerry does not appear to know what it is that he does.

Either that, or he's making the whole thing up.<P ID="signature">______________

Re: Earth To Gerry Bliss. Come In, Gerry...

I sell the prep services the national spots to play before local station breaks. I.E. Liza...Serta Pedic Beds, Thera Flu etc. The company I work for buy's spots at wholesale cost and resell's to the local radio and TV groups for the national addvertisers like Dial, Dove, Joy, AOL and so on. Its a simple process so national spots get air play in local communities like the bay area and its suburbs.

Thanks for muddying up an already muddy topic. You "sell the prep services?" You mean the outfits that do the daily joke sheets for radio stations?

And what the heck is "Liza"? Is that a TV show? A radio host somewhere? A product of some sort? Liza Minelli?

Gerry, you may want to read your posts back to yourself before hitting "Continue" just to make sure that they'll make sense to anyone beside yourself.

I've been in broadcasting, including a stint as a GM and one as a GSM, for over 45 years.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

There is no "wholesale price" for airtime... etc., etc., etc.
