CC's "Bloody Monday" Could Be Next Tuesday

The N.Y. Post's Peter Lauria is reporting this morning that Clear Channel's long-expected hammer will be coming down starting next week, with the company looking to cut over $400,000,000 in budget in short order. The Post report says it will be across-the-board, affecting all divisions of the business. CC is looking to
nationalize/regionalize many announcers & cut local staff, on-air & off, wherever possible.

The Post story also says CC management was aiming to announce many of these cuts on Obama's Inauguration Day next Tuesday, using a national event the day after a national holiday as "cover" {if
you didn't hear your favorite anchor, you might assume they're on an extended holiday weekend}....

The link to The Post article online:

My last remaining source at CC corporate told me {from a home phone because of security concerns!!!} few if any operations would be spared big cuts. With revenues down and forecasted revenues tumbling further still, "local talent with bigger contracts" are an inviting target.

A situation I would not have believed just a couple of years ago, my source said even those talents with longtime connects to major accounts {car dealerships, etc.} are not safe, because corporate says many of these are shutting down across the country and that revenue is evaporating or unsteady at best.

Yes, I know.....a lot of great radio pros are going to be hurt by this, and radio in general will probably drop in both quality & localism as well.....my in-advance sympathies go out to them {like most of us, I've been fired before, too}....

Any predictions for Sacramento?

I'd think because of ratings, KFBK will suffer the least, although cuts will likely still be made. I'd expect all the other CC stations to get drastic cuts.

John.....

Could be.....but news operations are labor intensive, and labor is the big target.

I would not really be surprised if CC choose to go solo anchor during drivetimes, and
demand more filler from reporters {including letting those local stories run longer than
:40}, an even greater reliance on phone interviews {P.R. people, take note}, and heavier
use of national/regional network content.

I would be amazed if CC doesn't push Fox News into creating more content that could
be inserted beyond top & bottom of hours...anything that can be inserted in news/talk
formats on hundreds of stations instead of local operations filling one-by-one has gotta
save $$$....and that is Priorities #1, #2, #3....#156.......

Pretty much was what I said in an earlier post. Kittty, Walsh, and other, maybe management types too, maybe effected by this. At this point in their careers it's pretty crappy for them because there's not a lot of options in radio unless they move to another market. So John, I think the biggest cuts ARE going to come from the Bk side of the building. That's where the big bucks lie, and that's an area that hasn't been hacked to bits yet.

This statement makes me think that maybe Armstrong and Getty will feel the bite too, despite the strong book that just came out. Heck, maybe they're going to feed all their news blocks and live talk from elsewhere. That would save them millions in just Sacramento alone.

IMO the localization of KFBK are one of the big reasons for it's ratings success and cutting out that would hurt them a lot. But a lot of the decisions being made these days don't make sense to me.

And Fox "news"??? Hahahaha! Fox entertainment/biased news.... bah!

John....

Wholly agree: the local coverage is what makes KFBK the powerhouse it has been for years...along with Rush & Sullivan....which, come to think of it, could be automated, with anchors/reporters working the boards during the newscasts...I've done it...{God knows, when I covered late nights at BK, I was board op/news anchor/editor-producer all at once}...this would save cash daily, but would screw up breaking news guaranteed.

If BK went solo anchor and cut their badly underpaid local news staff, the bean counters might crack a smile, but I'm sure the audience would drop when news coverage is depleted {hell, just look at The Bee and its current mess after "cost cutting"}....

However, killing off local DJs at 101 & 92.5, plus hacking A&G, would reduce the dreaded overhead...but at what price longterm? I doubt A&G would find anywhere else in the Sacramento market that would meet their demands unless they cut their asking price or they would switch to a music-with-gab format.

However, John, I disagree with one thing: I find Fox News reporting is not nearly as "biased' as, let's say, MSNBC's "reporting"....now, I'm talking reporting here, not commentary...although I cannot think of any news operation more biased or any commentators as agenda-driven than those at MSNBC...I haven't heard much radio news from ABC, CBS, or the others in years, so I cannot comment on that.

Word has it the halls of CCSAC have been unusually quiet. I've been fired twice before in down-sizings, but there are plenty of folks there who have never experienced it, they will be crushed and the fall from up high
hurts a lot more....pray for them all, including those who have to inform those who will be let go.

Here's the difference, Burnout: Fox News is a news network, thus the name "Fox News." MSNBC is not positioned as a news network. It's "The Place for Politics," a commentary network that occasionally reports some news. And your assertion that Fox News is not as biased as MSNBC is simply asinine.

jimmydigits........

With all due respect {and trying not to get too off-thread here}....MSNBC features NBC/MSNBC News reports & their reporters/news anchors, and handles breaking news; "Countdown" promotes itself as covering the top five news stories of the day, and they have "straight" news broadcasts, as well as clearly marked commentary.

Fox News does much the same....they just do not automatically attack every conservative utterance with complete dismissal like MSNBC does on virtually every broadcast.

As for the radio side, I don't hear much of Fox's alleged "bias" on their top & bottom newscasts as heard on KFBK. I simply haven't heard NBC Radio newscasts {or many other networks, for that matter} to come to an opinion.

John Walker says that most news is biased one way or the other.....true enough......

I share with Oldjock56 and other posters...we should give a kind thought and/or prayer for those affected.

Burnout...

On Countdown Olberman comments on the top 5 news stories. It's not a news report, nor does it claim to be. Hannity and O'Reilly comment on the news of the day. Try to distinguish between news and comment.

Hammerpants.....

You are right it almost hurts......

pard.....

Anyone with a heart hopes the damage will be minimal........

jimmydigits.............

We'll have to battle this out on some other post, after the CC bloodshed..........

Burnout....

Yeah, you'r right! Here's hoping the body count is minimal.

According to the Wall Street Journal, it sounds as if much of the loss will come from the sales department. While CC is acknowledging a desire to have more national programming, they are also looking to see which successful local shows they might be able to syndicate. That being said, I wonder how it will affect operations in Sac. I'll be keeping good thoughts for everyone.

The last time stocks were traded, CCMO (Clear Channel Radio) closed at $2.00 a share. It should be interesting what CCMO closes at following the anticipated news on their cost-cutting.
