CC's KISQ/SF GOING ONE WAY...KOCN/MONTEREY GOING ANOTHER

Interesting! Both were exclusively 60's/70's/80's Old School/R&B.

KISQ has been going the route of 70's Old-School w/healthy doses of 80's New Wave cuts.

KOCN recently flipped & is now going the route of 80's/90's Hip/Hop & R&B...With a few 70's cuts here and there?

Appearantly going after a younger Demo?

Wonder if KISQ will go the route of KOCN, if it works for it's sibling down the road?

Different markets. Nothing to compare. Although, if they were in the same market, they should be different and tarket other demos.

Kiss-FM tried a primarily 80s-90s format a couple of years ago- calling it "The Beat of the Bay." I wasn't paying close attention, but the station changed back to a 70s dominant format and the "Old School" handle after a couple of ratings periods. So I assume that the "Monterey" type format resulted in lower ratings. Given that, I doubt you'll see it returning anytime soon.

You have to realize KISQ sister stations are KMEL and KYLD. They don't want KISQ to eat up KMEL and KYLD demo's and ratings. KOCN doesn't have a problem with their sister station KDON since no other stations is competing against them in the Monterrey/Salinas/Santa Cruz market. The last competition was KYZZ Z97.9 which did horrible in the ratings before they flip to Classic Hits, and now Sports.

e-dawg...Good observation.

KOCN has left a significant hole in the market...With KYZZ (Classic Hits) also gone, the hole is even larger.

Before they started tweaking their music, which they've been doing for over a year, KOCN had a long-standing history of fairly solid numbers in the market!

A low-performing station in the area (like BOB or B-103.9) might have a good opportunity to run an Oldies/Classic Hits/70's/(R&B leaning) format?

KISQ is more '80s than '70s at this point -- and the other day I heard Mariah Carey's "Fantasy" which is from 1995 (tho' it samples Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" from '82 so it makes perfect sense for them to play it).

Adding the '80s New Wave and danceable white pop was a stroke of genius IMHO, even if it was born out of necessity (not competing with Oldies 103.7). Hope whoever thought of it got a bonus.

Sounds like a CC dictated thing for KOCN. They've made KOCN sound exactly like KFBT in Fresno...

in comparison... KOCN used to sound like KMGV in Fresno (they dominate that market)...

now they sound like KFBT (which lives in the 2 share range)...

The Monterey Bay is a different beast with it's terrain and low powered signals...

Any guesses which direction the ratings will go?

I liked the OLD K-Ocean.

It does leave a hole, but I doubt anyone in the market will do anything about it. Maybe KWAV will add a few more Rhythmic AC songs (Michael, Prince, Madonna)... but that'll be the extent.

If it means anything, I believe the personalities on KISQ (who also voicetrack Hot 92.3 in LA and V-100 in Sacramento, among others) are local Bay Area people. Tony Sandoval and Sylvia Chacon, in any case - not sure about Lisa St. Regis.

I've been told that Morris Knight actually does his show live.
