If I am not mistaken, Emmis's CEO dropped his salary to $1 and didn't even Mel Karmazin take a large pay cut? Why is this news considering they (the Mays) single-handedly put 1500 people out of work in one day. CC has been making bad decisions hurting the industry and lives since the Chandler/AMFM/Jacor merger. They prop up the people they love, and screw everyone else.

"They prop up the people they love, and screw everyone else." This is true all across the CC stations. With all the pink slips handed out CC still hasn't gotten it right on the local front. Their GM VP's saved their friends and girlfriends and the people that are up their rear ends.

Here's a question too...What ever happened to that .cc domain scam. that the Mays were pitching years ago? "Call all your clients to tell them to buy up their domains. .cc will be the next big thing". Bet they made a pretty penny on that.

Mays aren't going to make money if their people keep taking $25 rates on national accounts.
It's a buyer's market for RADIO!

I say at least their doing something to help cut costs. Those who make negative comments only wish they were making $500,000 a year. I say if you can get it go for it and good for you.

Negative comments? Let me tell you something pal, the things that many people have seen and experienced may be negative but they are based on fact. San Antonio doesn't have a clue what goes on at thier local stations. Especially the salaries being made by 'favorites' that are not deserved. GM's and VP's that do nothing, nothing but take on any accolades that come by. Oh, but having a GM completely ignore you on an elevator ride up because, what that you aren't one of his cronies. That's respect, that's a thank you "the CC-way".

But these are CC's stations. They can do whatever they want. Keep saying they have the best quality radio. That their people are their best asset. Locally, its a joke. And I don't have to wish pal, I all ready made it.

They tried to hide the firings by doing them all on a busy news day and then several days later it's front page Business news MAYES BROS TAKE A 40+ % PAY CUT. Gee, they are so great. Did you read the article? A firm that advises companies on pay issues (how not to look bad) was quoted as saying "Really good corporate governance" "It sends a clear message...blah ...blah...everyone should take it on the chin, not just the little people." The LITTLE PEOPLE???!! Is that how they see everyone else? "Our people are our most important asset." Right.

Bartstar....good for you.

When I worked for CC, I was expressly told by my MD/APD that no matter how many hours I was scheduled or called in to work, I would only be paid for 29.5 hours and if I were to write more than 29.5 hours on my time sheet, I would find myself off the schedule altogether. I was regularly scheduled for at least 30 hours per week, and often called in to do fill-in work for other dayparts in addition to my regular schedule. In addition, one year during the station's New Years' Requests special feature, while everyone else was on vacation, I was scheduled for ten days straight from midnight to 3 pm (which I did because it was a great chance to actually play what the listeners requested---and, oh yeah, because I loved my job). I got paid, surprise, for exactly 29.5 hours per week during that time.

Yeah, you got me pegged; I only WISH I were making $500,000 per year. I couldn't even get paid for the hours I legitimately worked.

Doesn't that give me, and many, many others just like me, the right to make negative comments about the Mays' brothers' "sacrifice"?

I was reading...

Under the new deal... the Brothers Mays will bring home $500,000 each this year (base salary) . Under the old agreement, CEO Mark was to get $895,000, while his CFO-brother Randall was due $875,000. After this year, their minimum base salaries rise to $1 million. If they achieve their "goals" they'll be rolling in bonus money as well.

So, not to "downplay" their salary reduction - but they'll make up for it next year with a big bump. This move was obviously purely for "show".

I'm sure they won't be going without a darn thing on any level with the exception of a good nights sleep due to sleeping with one eye open.

Money can't buy you love...happiness or a key to the pearly gates. Greed can and will usually always send you straight to your own personal hell.

You guys are so bitter that its comical.

If you were half as good as you thought you were, you'd be making 6 figures.

If you are all such dynamic figures of radio, why arent you doing a high (or semi high) profile morning show?

The cream always seems to rise to the top (even after being fired numerous times). The rest do not. And they sit back and bitch and moan at the people who have.

Stool samples also rise to the top. Since its a fact in the financial industry, I'm sure it applies to radio as well.

In the past I have agreed with sentiments like yours. This business has always had plenty of people who resent the success of others and moan about not getting more money when s0-and-so makes 6 figures.

I have always said, "don't blame others for doing well---blame yourself for not doing better!"

This no longer applies.

In the past year, I have seen far too many talented industry vets with great ratings track records (who wear many hats), get booted. What is really unsettling, is this idea that the cream of the crop will rise to the top. It's just not that true anymore. It's just not. In many cases now, those willing to work cheap will hang onto their jobs and those who can deliver numbers are shown the door. It's crazy, but that is happening.

Up is down and down is up. Left is right and right is left.

This is a very different busienss these days, so don't be so sure of yourself when criticizing those who speak out.

Sure, stool samples rise to the top. IF THERE'S TOO MUCH FAT IN YOUR DIET. Good, healthy cholesteral-fighting bran makes it all sink to the bottom.

I don't know what that has to do with radio, but SOMETHING.

I took a pay cut, too. Happy to do it. Coffee is free at work (for now).

I have a thought: stations went from full commission to salaried sales people. With commission, you can make as much as you want work as hard as you want. But today's salaried salespeople just make their salary, without the desire to work (and sell) more than
they have too. Commission sales is about the chase and the close and finding the next big lead or business coming to town. And when management came up with a way to incent the sales staff to make more money, only the hard working, persistent sales people made more money.

Salary does not challenge me. On commission I am in control of what I earn and how hard I want to run. So did salaried salespeople influence revenue coming in? You bet!
