CC's new commercial-free format in Dallas

This won't work. Where are the 90 second promos to win a case of snowmobile oil with Simpson's drops? Where are the screaming aggressive "BUY TODAY DRIVE TODAY..ONLY CHUMPS WALK" car spots? Where are the off-key singing jingles with the jock's name? Where is the reverb, and the stutters and the musical train wrecks and the laughing cheerleaderesque girl in the morning, and the loud overbearing male "shill sidekick" and the squealing over produced nightclub spots?..and what about those Simpson's drops? And car dealer remotes giving away Hooter's wings, and key chains? God those were drop dead great! Brilliance!

After this fad goes away the sponsors will want all of that back..and somebody in the market will keep doing it.

Siriusly it sounds a lot like the BBC.

It's not commercial free. The station is selling blocks of programming. This has been tried a thousand times before, but it always returns to the formulas that have proven to work best.

It may not be in your face, yelling car lot guys, but somehow advertising dollars will be sucked in by the corporate machine. Look for product placement coming soon to a radio near you. (Um... I mean in Dallas)

Public television is commercial free as well, however, there usually is a stop set prior to each program that informs us as to who is making all this possible. This really isn't a bad idea. How many times have you heard a spot cluster of 4 spots and two are car dealers. How does the listener retain all that info, if in fact, the listener hasn't punched another button on the radio. Possibly: "This 30 minute music sweep from your friends at Castriota Chevrolet where you can drive a new Impala for 199 a month". 3 songs into the set: "30 minutes of commercial free music from your friends at Castriota Chevrolet, drive a little and save alot". Just a thought.

Call me crazy! The more I think about this, the more I like it. Call it "Commerical Free Radio" or maybe something a little more creative. Heck, if PBS can call themselves commercial free and run spots, why can't radio? It would create quite a buzz. "The New FREE 101.5" "Free 93.3" sounds good, doesn't it!

Fraaaank!

In order to do this, the station would have to charge a whale of a lot more for that "block sponsorship" If a sponsor has 5000 to spend on advertising in a week and the hour block costs 1200..they are only covering only 3 hours in a week...whereas that same 5000 in 30 sec spots at 100 bucks each would spread out the potential audience a lot more..To shoot your shot in one hour seems cost prohibitive unless the station is cutting deals in order to do this and potentialy gain new listeners..but then the revenue goes down..Where's the profit? Eventually as said before they will go back to spot ads.

Jeff, you've really nailed it. What KZPS is doing is certainly unique, though not previously untried. They'll generate a lot of buzz in the Dallas advertising community, and a little bit of buzz with the general public.

But in the end, this model won't generate nearly enough revenue to sustain the kinds of margins that CC demands. It's a great idea, and it has us all talking, but it ain't gonna last.

Too bad. So sad.
