CC's Smooth Jazz KYOT next to go?

Ok gang, it was me who predicted a KYOT change. Take a look at the CC properties currently flipping. Yesterday Smooth Jazz KKSF San Francisco becomes "The Band" a Classic Hits hybrid, filing the hole that KFRC left behind and now rumours out of Chicago that Smooth Jazz WNUA, will be flipping to Country. US99 owns country in Chicago, so that leaves some room for competition.

So back to our fun prediction. FM Talk? KFYI to 95.5? Triple A? Alternative on a 100k stick?

Where is Mr. Know It All David Eduardo on this? And don't tell me "Phoenix is different, KYOT bills a ton." A format change to KYOT is coming. Like it or not.

Yuppie Elevator Music is so '90s, but if it's billing well, why blow it up? Like sports-talk, it's about the money even if the ratings low.

But if it does happen, it makes more sense (to me, anyway) to move KFYI to News-Talk Ninety-Five-Fifty and move sports from 910 to 102.5. Then return KOY to 550, put KNIX Classic Country on 910, and sell off 1230 (A brokered Asian-languages format might work on that frequency).

It's a no brainer to move KFWhyEye to 95~Five, but the problem is what to do with 5~Fifty. Clear Channel has no sports franchise in Phoenix, so moving XTRA 9~Ten to 5~Fifty is pointless. KayOhWhy to 9~Ten and shutter 12~Thiry, okay. But that 5~Fifty dial position and coverage is too good for a throw away format. So CC should follow the advise Nurse Jeff and I gave them a long time ago: move KFWhyEye to FM and sell 5~Fifty to TMISU. Imagine Sports Parking Lot 6~Twenty and Sports Parking Lot 5~Fifty. No more bumping Crummey and the Luvable One for a lousy ballgame!

WNUA's rumor could be a smokescreen to take the focus off of KYOT. I think KYOT is next. PD is out and no apparent moves to replace him. Plus they have plenty of staff where the CC SJ stations just hit with a format change didn't lose anyone since they were on the BA bird. KYOT has warm bodies, making them the next logical choice. I know WNUA has bodies as well but for some reason I think it will be around a while longer. That's Ramsey Lewis' flagship station. At the same time he's losing mountains listeners around the country with major format defections so being a flagship may be a moot point. KYOT is the one to watch.

Not to mention how well the Classic Hits formats do in PPM...could KYOT be planning an attack on KOOL? With KOOL's heritage, I don't see that being an option [see The Peak]. At any rate, I am watchin KYOT-

So, Rush Limabaugh on FM? KFYI has dominated in the 25-54's, so a move to FM makes sense.

I can't wait to hear Bruce Jacobs ranting and raving on FM! And you thought his rants on AM were shrill and annoying...just you wait Henry Higgins!

The Nearly Bald one is probably doing flips and salivating over the prospects of moving to FM. Could this mean the second coming of Dr. Science? ??? Only time will tell (Dr. Science can tell you everything you wanted to know about chronometer deviation). :D

If Rush moves to the FM dial, you can expect a run on FM radios at Wally Mart as the Sun City Posse tosses their AM toaster radios and upgrade to the future of radio--Frequency Modulation!! ;D

And JD "Boss Hog" Hayworth's ascendency to the US Senate or Governorship will be assured as he will be able to assimilate more likely voters on FM. Resistance is futile!! ;D

KYOT isn't going anywhere!! Still sounds great and has no real competition. And they bill like crazy!

Phoenix, San Diego and L.A. seem to have the only viable markets for the format.

And they wont go up against KTAR!

Clear has registered in the last few weeks Mega955.com, but it could be the "other" smooth jazz station, WNUA.

KYOT bills nearly as much as KFYI, so the revenue gain is not there... KZZP bills less, in fact.

I heard that KTAR FM, in the first PPM pre-currency month, beat KFYI very significanty in 25-54, but I do not have the numbers myself.

WNUA swings to Spanish format -- chicagotribune.comMay 21, 2009 ... has not been finalized, but the new Chicago station branding will be Mega 95.5, and it will be available online through Mega955.com

Clear Channel couldn't do Mega 95.5 here -- Sierra H has Rhythmic Oldies Mega 104.3.

And Clear owns the service mark, meaning they could likely get the other station to drop its usage, as they did with Kiss in Bakersfield.

It's finalized. In fact, it happens in about 40 minutes (9:55 AM Chicago time). Smooth Jazz will remain online and on WNUA-HD2. If CC want's a big piece of that Spanish-language pie (and they do), it could happen here as well, even though there are more Spanish-language FM stations in Phoenix (5) than in Chicago (2) to compete with.

Maybe they won't bother, given the increased competition here.

Oh OK...I was wondering about that. I had heard that CC didn't own the service mark.

BTW- Early PPM data shows Rush 7th in middays [25-54]

Also---
w/o Univision encoding..this would be a great opp for CC. KYOT would be, the first 100k watt signal to go Spanish… SMACK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DIAL. WNUA, now spanish....

...and "if you don't encode, you don't exist."

What is the reason that stations do not encode? Arbitron claims it's free. Is it because of fear that their numbers will be lower than the diary indicates?

It's really a shame CC is doing this to great stations. I suppose The Wave is next. :(
But well, like Chicago, Milwaukee and another city has had a renaissance and that is good that other companies are aiming to save this awesome format.

The PPM is not MRC accredited in any market except Houston and Philly, and is still, therefore, lacking.
