[email protected] no longer streaming

This station is becoming the laughing stock of Columbus radio. They've got no brand, no music philosophy, the sales squad couldn't sell gas at a buck a gallon, the imaging sucks, social networking is at a loss, and now the streaming has been shut down. Good gawd, that should be a strength considering the signal! There is no excuse for this! They can preach cost all they want, but it's pure lazyness, and lack of vision on their part. I would fix that place in a month. They have promotions and The Big Room to build on at this point, all else is lost. Time to blow it all up and start over!

Strange they would shut down the stream. From the [email protected] site:

A message to our online listeners:

Due to the uncertainty over rights issues related to Internet streaming of radio broadcast programming, including demands for additional streaming fees for recorded music and radio commercials by BMI, ASCAP, SESAC, and The RMCL we’ve chosen to suspend streaming until all these issues are settled. We apologize for any inconvenience, and urge you to contact your congressional representative and ask them to get involved with the streaming issues and help find a solution. We will continue to explore all options and hope to resume streaming as soon as these issues are resolved. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Wonder if their LMA costs are more than they can handle though they did sell 101.1 to The OSU so they shouldn't be hurting for cash.. I have friends who listen to this station already complaining that the stream is gone.. seems like a sudden move (when social networking, web streaming, etc..) is the in thing.

The fees to stream are based on revenue. You pay ASCAP, BMI, etc... a fixed percentage of station revenue for the right to stream your content online. There was no new issue that came up. They know what their fess are and have always known what their fees are. They either cut it to be cheap and save money, the finally got caught streaming without paying, or they cut it for their move to a new building. Though I highly doubt they cut it for the move, do you think they will kill the air feed for the move, no? They build the new studio/building and then make the switch, there is no down time.

I think they just want to save the money.

It's all about saving money ... nothing more.. or just putting up a protest. The fees have not changed in a few years.. I know I am a web caster myself and pay ASCAP/BMI/SEASC/SoundExchange.. They have known the cost because they have been paying it. This is either a) saving money b) protest that is gonna not win them any votes or fans. (their listeners have already complained on their facebook page) -- though MOST are sadly mis guided thinking it's "some big govt thing to shut down their fav Cd101 online" since CD102.5 says contact your congress people.

Agreed. As an employee of one of the radio big boys I can tell you the only way their fees went up is if their revenue went up. Not a bad problem to have I would say. You are 100% correct, they're just being cheap the listeners can't do anything.

Write your Congressman... what a joke.

What makes no sense is that a ZANESVILLE TV station outside of the Columbus market proper is writing about a Columbus radio station moving from one Columbus location to another Columbus location. I know it's the former WHIZ-FM, and WHIZ owns the signal, but that's akin to the Cleveland Plain Dealer writing about a station in Canton moving down the street to new studio space. Words fail me here.

Then again, nothing about WWCD makes any whit of sense to me. The fact that they inexplicably got a 3.6 shows that New Math has infected the Columbus population in ways I never would have imagined.

I always thought 101.1 is not equivalent to 102.5. Unless you work for WWCD, that is. What a joke.

This reminds me of when 103.9 stopped streaming a number of years back. The reasons given were very similar, and they likewise urged those who missed the stream to contact their congresspeople.

When the station flipped to TED-FM in late 2004 the streaming resumed, and AFAIK has been there ever since.

I often wonder if these quirks of conventional programming/promotional wisdom is part of their success. They've always gone against the wind since day one.

I think that's the case, mixed with a subjectively better signal, and the lack of a competitor.

I agree with Del. Despite the many criticisms of them on this board, they're still chugging along.

Well, yeah... when all you have is lukewarm Alpo to choose from, you can't go for the fillet mignon.

Could just be that the amount of PPM meters in the market in their target demo is so minute, that the ROI on streaming isn't worth it. They may have figured that (assuming they target 18-34) their audience isn't listening to the stream in such #s (do OSU students get meters?) that it makes fiscal sense.

How many Columbus stations' streams show up in PPM?

That may just be the answer.

Or, perhaps they don't want to spend for the encoders due to the ROI for that as well?

I would hope that most intelligent people would not accept every thought and discussion on a chat board as being the last word as real and credible. There are gem's to be found here, and other places, but to run your business from opinions of a chat board isn't really that smart...

[email protected] is moving here:
http://www.columbusalive.com/live/c...cd101-moving-to-new-headquarters.html?sid=108
and they will continue to rent space at the Swiss Chalet Party house which they now own. It appears they have found yet another use for
the new improved and expanded Big room at their new studio/office location. When it's not in use for [email protected] concerts, they are going
to be renting out space in the Big Room. Saw an ad for this in 614 magazine.
Here is the new website for renting space in the new [email protected] Big Room mentioned in the ad:

http://www.bigroomevents.com/

Why bother? Makes me wonder if them dropping streaming has something to do with saving money if they also have to rent the new Big Room
to make a few more bucks.
