CD101 moving?

In retrospect, that's one we should have guessed as a good possibility.  They've been looking for upgrade strategies for years.  Would definitely be a big improvement in signal coverage for CD101, although the downside for them is that 102.5 seems to suffer from Dispatch-tower interference near central Columbus -- though maybe not as badly as most stations that aren't actually on the tower.  Near-in areas like the Short North are important for WWCD.

BTW, if this comes to pass it is another example of where Saga/Columbus is woefully inept.  If they can't score a true second big signal, at least they could have gotten this one.  Maybe they need to take a good, hard look at their local management. 102.5 is a much better than any of their existing rimshots.  Nabco would be missing out as well.

I can get 102.5 in the short north which is where a great deal of their listenner base is. Would they spin off 101.1 to someone else? Also, what happens to Blue Jackets on FM? Does the Fan just swallow them up?

102.5 is going to be an improvement for them if they move there. 101.1 suffers major interference downtown..

For the longest time. WWCD's owners tried to swap towers with 90.5 WCBE (which is downtown on the Levique tower)

** this sort of move would have been possible since 101.1's 10.6 steps away from 90.5 FM

(The most significant such taboo restricts the allocation of stations 10.6 and 10.8 MHz apart, to protect against mixing products which will interfere with an FM receiver's standard 10.7 MHz intermediate frequency stage.)

Ofcourse WCBE liked their 'central' tower location downtown so they would never agree to move to transmitting from WWCD's Borror Rd Transmitter site..

What I remember of this was that CD101 offered to pay the cost of the increase to WCBE's max wattage if they swapped towers. Their signal would have been the same, if not better in many places. Bill Moss convinced the Columbus Board of Education that they did not want to get involved with a corporate radio deal and it was dropped. From what I read in Dispatch articles at the time, he was the main voice against the proposal. Why they didn't try again after he died and was no longer on the board, I'm not sure. 101.1 from LeVeque would be better than 102.5 from Baltimore.

What would come to 101.1 then? New format perhaps?

for once, I'll have to agree this might be an interesting place for your format choices, In as much a nice urban format would give their sales department something else to sell, that would not conflict with their main product.

also, as a local, they may well be more tempted to sell to one of the local buyers, one group in particular, who wants to do another urban format here in town...

might finally get interesting here.

How interesting can speculating on the new format on 101 be, unless someone figures out how to upgrade the signal?  As it is, it's still a highly-deficient signal (even if it's an absolute  powerhouse compared to a bad-joke signal  like WODB).   If 101 *was* somehow able to find an upgrade route, as per the LeVeque discussion, it probably would've already happened.  The only operator in town whose upgrade track record is good (basically the opposite of their format-selection record) is CC, and they're maxed out.  Besides, isn't it a foregone conclusion that the new format will be COUNTRY if WWCD gets 102.5, to get us back up to the requisite FIVE?  And at this point isn't it the move still a rumor?

Would they be moving the frequency of 102.5 to 101.1? As in would they take over 102.5, and switch the frequency to 101.1.
the signals would stay on the same frequencies. the Format that is currently on 101.1 would move to 102.5 under this proposed idea. and then 101.1 would get a new format

CD 101 could move anywhere and still be where they are ratings-wise. They are a destination station.

He's right. They're the only real alternative in town, so no matter where they go, their listeners will follow. As for 101.1, it'd be a good idea to find a new format... that does well with PPM.

Assuming they don't find a buyer/don't want to find a buyer, I really don't know what kind of format they'll do. They are very Anticorporate, so it'd be tough for them to do anything *conventional*.

Considering there is a price tag to be paid to get 102.5's license.. I do NOT see 101.1 staying in the hands of the current owner, I see them selling it if all possible.. they can't be making millions off CD's format right now.

The only thing I think might work in their favor is I wonder if WHIZ will make them a great deal for 102.5, being CD101's a local broadcaster... and being a tough economy so selling for big money is tough.

But hey anything is possible.. They could turn 101.1 into the Alternative, Alternative.. Playing all locals or something..

Despite the fact that 106.7 has wonderfully broken the local duplication curse with its flip to GenX, I'm betting 101 will end up with a format that already exists in town.

"Highway 101.. Columbus's hit country... WCVZ Grove City/Columbus" :p lol (I don't really wish that).

Pure AAA on 101.1 and pure indie/modern on 102.5?

Hey, in Santa Fe there's a company that owns an eclectic AAA and an alternative/mainstream rock hybrid.

Other wild format ideas for 101.1 that would fit with the current owners:

Chillout/downtempo/lounge
Contemporary standards ala "Avenue" stations in Chicago and Green Bay
Americana/Folk/Alt Country
Progressive talk

None likely, but it's fun to speculate.

If CD 101 moves, I would think a flip would be unlikely since Radio 106.7 just flipped yesterday. That would leave something Columbus knows nothing about, a huge, unfilled format hole. ;D
