CD101 moving?

This still leaves 101.7 open for a new format, so our dreams of a CHR or another niche format aren't gone yet! I'm still excited over Gen X! This is the most action Columbus has seen in years. Two big things happening to the market in 3 days.

As I was writing, Nathan has posted. CD101 is now on 102.5 - welcome alternative fans.

The final song on 102.5 just ended followed by about 15 seconds of dead air and then station ID for CD101 which also included information that they are now on frequency 102.5.

And that automation computer in a closet in Zanesville can be taken out so a salesperson can run Word and Excel.

:D

Well, maybe EMF will buy 820? Heh. Or Gary Richards will lease 820 and put a commercial libtalk format on it. (Relax, Mr. Bigley, I'm KIDDING!)

The article says 102.5. IT was cut off from the copied post.

The first version of the article did not have the actual new "CD101" frequency. I presume they were waiting for the other announcement.

LOL! I am going to miss the automated country complete with dead air between songs .. and commerical breaks right out of songs .. and one or two zanesville adverts an hour. I have to admit, I liked the selection of Country on 102.5... they played stuff that WCOL/WHOK/WNKK don't typically play in rotation.

The Computer has been replaced by a radio tuned to 101.1 FM I bet..

The only thing I don't get is I would think they would want to shead the CD101 image.. and call themselves 102.5.... kinda like when WHIZ's old format moved to 92.7 they launched as Z92 but still simlucasted for a period of time.

Since WWCD expects the license to be turned over to WOSU in 90 days (pending FCC approval) you would think they would want to promote 102.5 more.. and shy listeners away from 101.1... I don't know many alternative heads who wanna wake up some morning to hear Bach instead of Foo Fighters.

The next question comes to mind .. Will WOSU program 101.1 locally 24/7 or run say classical247 on the new license. Also, will they make a stab at Comm. classical radio or convert it to a non com?

I was trying to explain that to my non-media-involved relative listening along. "They just don't care that it sounds sloppy?", he asked me...and I explained that WHIZ Media Group could put hog calls on the frequency for all it mattered, as they were just demonstrating the signal to the eventual buyer.

BTW, see Tim Feran's article in the Dispatch. It doesn't seem like Ingleside/Fun With Radio is actually buying 102.5, but is "operating" it "in a partnership" with the WHIZ folks. Or maybe he's just waiting for the dust to settle after WOSU buys 101.1.

It looks like they plan to do it in stages - note the reported registrations of both CD101at1025.com and CD1025.com.

IIRC, the WHIZ folks were doing "Z102 and 92.7" on air for at least a month or two, and may not have dropped the 102 part even until they debuted the now-dead Highway 102 format.

Good question. My guess is that they'll program whatever classical dayparts they are moving over from 89.7 as they do now, and use classical247 for the rest (if they aren't using it already).

Well, the press release on WWCD's site says:

"The Ohio State University, has agreed to terms to acquire frequency, 101.FM, to expand WOSU’s public service broadcasting for the region."

So I assume public service = non-com. I wonder if it would even be legal for a public university to have a commercial station? The only commercial school-owned stations I can think of are private schools, but maybe there are some public-school commercial outlets that I'm unaware of. Anyone know of any?

WRUF AM & FM in Gainesville are commercial stations owned by the University of Florida, the AM station runs a news/talk/sports format, and the FM is active rock.

WHUR in Washington, DC is a commercial station owned by Howard University.

Nope, they could run it commercial if they wanted, but they probably have enough people in the "begging departments" to make what they need....figuring their access to grants and such, they will probably do better as a non comm.

This is a much improved signal for WWCD. My curiosity is that there was never anything saying that Fun With Radio Inc. is purchasing 102.5, so is it an LMA?

Perhaps Roger needs to wait for OSU's check to clear before he buys 102.5?...

I noticed this and wondered the same thing.

The processing on WCVZ leaves some to be desired as compared to WWCD, IMO. Of course, I am aware they're still "ironing out the kinks" to a certain extent.

I was going to mention WHUR but couldn't tell if Howard U. was a public university or not.

Penn State (via their Behrend campus in Erie, PA) also owns and operates financial news outlet WPSE/1450, also in Erie.

What is now known as Georgia Tech also build and signed on WGST-AM in Atlanta (for the Georgia School of Technology) and owned it until the mid-70s.

This is also slightly unrelated, but Iowa State signed on WOI-TV in Ames, which became a commercial TV station and ABC affiliate. They owned that station from 1950 until the mid-90s. Which is interesting because ISU's radio stations, WOI AM/FM, have been non-comm stations since they signed on.

Thanks to the posters who provided examples of public schools running commercial stations. Sure clears up that question. Will be interesting to see if this happens with 101.

Today's Dispatch has a more thorough review of the CD101/WOSU move, with some interesting new details.

One thing that caught my eye is OSU saying they intend to upgrade 101's signal at some point.  How would they be able to accomplish this at 101 when for years Vaughan has been unsuccessful in his attempts to do the same?

Also, it's curious that the Dispatch still has had nothing on the change at 106.7.  I thought CC usually sends a press release.
