Cedar Rapids Ratings

"Sappy" kind of sums up WMT-AM... it's usually been several decades behind the times. They were stuck in the 50s until about the mid-70s, when PD Joe Martelle got it up to speed. Then it pretty much stayed in the 70s until Palmer bought it, dropped the music (except Sunday) and made it an actual news/talk station. But it still sounds tired and sappy compared to WHO.

I haven't seen any numbers except 12+ for a couple of years, but I'd expect WHO to do better 25-54 than WMT.

And I'd guess much of the numbers loss for WMT has been in the older demos who have moved over to KMRY, which is playing about the same music today WMT was playing in the 70s.

WMT spent too many years catering to the 65+ part of their audience and failed to do anything (except Rush) to attract any new listeners as the old ones died off. About 10 years ago, a then WMT employee told me they had brought in a consultant, who told them to quit serving rural eastern Iowa and concentrate on CR, since that's where the population is. I think while WMT was staying "comfortable as an old shoe" (as Rick Sellers once termed the station) the people in their 40s who got tired of rock and AC and in other markets would have moved to newstalk didn't move to WMT because it was "too sappy." (A lot of them instead apparently went to KHAK.) Jerry Carr was a nice guy, but did it make sense to have the morning drive show aimed at the WWII generation?

Mediawatcher a few posts back has some excellent suggestions... but CC doesn't seem to want to do much with the station.

jh....Great post. I think you nailed it.

Yes, I get the impression CC doesn't know what do do with WMT, nor do they seem to care. They've probably never had an animal quite like this on their hands before....and they probably don't have the foggiest idea or appreciation of what it is/was/could be. To the suits at CC, WMT is likely viewed simply as a line item of marginal significance.

WHO and WMT had a lot of similarities back in the late '60s and early 70s. Not so now (other than they both cover a huge chunk of real estate). WHO has moved forward....WMT has, at best, drifted.

Hey [EDIT*]....I thought we might finally find some common ground! I notice you slyly avoided mentioning your results. Your beloved 100.7 felt the pinch just as bad as Norton. You never miss an opportunity to belittle the beligerent. I think you guys should have done better than the almighty Arbitron claims you did. Great talent. Great music. Your prediction that KRNA would blow even harder was wrong. [EDIT**]

[EDIT*=name calling][EDIT**=vulgar]
Here is one of the links I was referring to....You are trying hard to bring in some forces to say mean things to me in your defense...that is not my intention to make you feel like you need big back ups...I am not the one all worked up here. Sorry I brought your name up and your blood pressure.

That was a response to Supersoul (He is a 100.7 guy and was attacking EVERYONE else in the book.). I admitted, and still stand by 100% to everything I've EVER said to supersoul. There isn't a person on this board who wouldn't agree that Supersoul's main purpose in life is to SLANDER EVERYONE in the market. I again say, if I have EVER said anything mean spirited toward you please come forward. FCC

Funny Michelle, you couldn't be more wrong about Supersoul.

Supersoul hasn't worked in the market in over a decade.

Norton axed Supersoul years ago. His abusive manner was a dark cloud over many of us.

Nobody at 100.7 would bother with you. They are above that.

Supersoul is not.

This whole thread, especially the first page is what I'd like to see less of in the Radio Info survey that popped up today. Less bickering, less arguing. You people continue to violate board policy (as shown in red) like it's nothing. AND, the ONLY 100.7 I would ever like most is former KFMB Star 100.7 out of San Diego, CA IMHO.
