Apropos of this, I noticed a Danny Kaye six-episode "Best Of" DVD set coming out shortly. He was an incredibly talented man - incredibly difficult to work with (at least at times) as well, but no denying his talent. He could do it all - no pun intended.

I read an article quoting Basil Rathbone who played the villain in several swashbucklers. These movies end with a big, extended sword fight between Basil and the hero (Errol Flynn, Tyrone Power...), in which Basil was killed off and the hero got the girl. In fact, both Flynn and Power were very poor at fencing and Basil was an accomplished fencer who could easily defeat either of them. When Basil made a send-up of swashbuckler movies, "The Court Jester," with Danny Kaye in one of his Walter Mitty type roles, Basil said Danny had never fenced before but within two weeks Danny, a brilliant natural athlete, could "completely out-fence" him. Fencing in addition to physical comedy, singing, dancing, acting, impressions, improvisations...
