Celts on 'RKO now official

It was announced yesterday in the Globe and on WEEI and WRKO that WRKO indeed is the new home for the Celtics. Press release (looks like they want to start up a network--would guess WEEI-FM in Westerly and the Worcester station would be aboard, unless there's Red Sox conflicts? WEEI-FM gets the Sox next year after one last yr on WPRO):

Kudos to Boston Radio Watch for giving us the advance word last week.

Actually, WTAG-AM 580 carries the Boston Red Sox and WEEI’s sister station in Worcester, WVEI-AM 1440 carries the PawSox. When the Red Sox contract was up in Worcester (I believe 3 years ago), the prevailing thought was that the games would move to WVEI. They signed another 3 year deal with Clear Channel’s WTAG due to a much better night time signal.

Also, now that the Ice Cats have left town for Peoria, Illinois - WTAG has expressed interest in carrying the Celtics. Unless Entercom intends to put some serious efforts into WVEI other than simply treating it as a forgotten step child, I would think that WTAG would be in the running for both retaining the Red Sox rights and carrying the Celtics in Central New England.

Although I'm not a Celtics fan, (I really don't care for basketball outside of the UCONN Huskies) I think it would be great if the games ended up on WEEI-FM in Providence. For the Basketball Season that just ended the Celters were on a Provdience Rimshotter AM - 1320 The Drive WARL. The team should be on a full-market FM or AM station in Providence, not a rimmshotter. As for the Worcester Market - they should go to WVEI 1440 for obvious reasons, but they might not want to. Maybe Clear Channel wants a 2 or 3 station deal - WTAG Worcester, WNNZ Springfield, and maybe WPOP Hartford. I know for the season that just ended WNNZ was the Springfield affiliate on the Celts. WPOP? Who knows? It depends on how much of a following the Celts have in Connecticut. WPOP actually may be tied up seeing how they carry CCSU Men's basketball and I think the Wolfpack AHL team too.<P ID="signature">______________

Another good reason NOT to turn on WRKO. More opiate for the masses while Rome burns to mix a metaphor...or is it a simile.

cool news... I hope they bring over Sean Grande and Cedric Maxwell... it'll be good to be able to pick up their games on the radio again... WWZN has such a weak signal.

Well I'm not a basketball fan except maybe for the end of the game(s) in the playoffs, but I'd rather listen to Celtics than Savage.

I suspect Grande and Maxwell will make the move to WRKO. They are considered two of the better local commentators in the NBA. I can't see them getting replaced.

by the way there was an article about the Globe which wondered why WEEI wouldn't want the Celtics. They answered their own question: because they can get higher
ratings with Sarandis talking sports than with Celts games!
