Central Iowa's KDAO-FM flips...

A recipe for an awfully narrow playlist. Why not play '80s and 2000s music that also tests well with listeners in the target demographic?

Maybe. But it might play some deeper tracks from the decade. What I'm curious about is if KDAO-FM is including rap material in its 90's mix. Rap, after all, was very high (along with R&B ballads) on Billboard's national charts during most of that decade. (For the record, my guess is in the negative--the station serves an audience of [mostly] conservative white farmers who, even if they purchased rap music when they were younger, are most likely put off by it now.)

You might be surprised nowdays. It's 2026.

That being said, if there is any it will be just a few token very top of the charts familiar tracks. Mostly R&B probably. This will be, for the most part, a pop-rock station.

Yes, and especially in the first half of the 1990s, there wasn't much in the way of mass-appeal pop hits. You had ballads, rap, dance, and alternative rock. That's what led some CHR stations to shift to Hot AC, with slogans like "No Rap, No Hard Stuff, No Sleepy Elevator Music", filling in the playlist with a lot of '70s and '80s music (including the comeback of Disco).
 
So obviously, they used AI for their logo. Told ChatGPT, "Make my logo for Rewind 92.9, with a '90s stylish look to it." If I were launching this station, I'd handwrite an artsy label that says "Rewind 92.9" onto a VHS cassette, and that would be the station logo :)

I'll have to wait for a stream. Hopefully it's not just Mariah Carey and NSync on repeat all day...hopefully they have some deeper '90s cuts with soft rock, crossovers, and less-common pop rock (#20 charters vs. #1s).

I wouldn't hold my breath. No knowledge of how they are getting their music, but its a small town station. Maybe 2-3 in the building with ANY music research experience. Maybe. Not sure its all gonna be MC or boy bands, but digging deep into #20 charters for such a narrow station is going down a slippery slope. Most people on boards like this want it to be fun, fresh, and not the "same old songs" over and over. But commercial radio isnt for music discovery. Its to attract ears to hear commercials. And the number 1 songs are way familiar then the number 28 songs from 1995...which by the was was "Red Light Special" by TLC...I think they really would rather play No Scrubs or Waterfalls or even Baby, Baby, Baby.

And AI didn't tell them that cassette tapes were already on their way out in the '90s; CDs became the best-selling music format in 1992, and by the end of the decade, portable MP3 players were the hot new thing.

So using the name "Rewind" and putting a cassette tape in the logo makes '90s music seem older than it really is. It would be more apt for an '80s format, like SiriusXM's "Classic Rewind" '80s Rock music channel.
 
i think the logo is fine, listeners wont be evaluating it to death like we are and i think the choice of format is fine. I think after the intial debut, theyll likely open up the playlist like Sunny in Sioux Falls did and if they play the usuals/favorites, toss in some oh wows and dont follow the rules.. this has the potential to really be good, and un;lock the check books of what i assume to be the target audience.. moms and dads who spend money. give them music they remember growing up that kids can listen and it'll evok some good/happy thoughts.. what is also not known here is jock theyll have on air.. and the attitude they portray on the air.. like if the jocks just read liner cards or are allowed to.. jam out to the music, get into it... and really light up the personality......... have fun on the air and seem like you love the music .. and your listeners will too,.

A couple other almost forgotten tracks I suddenly recognized when I heard them. One Cheryl Crow one I has forgot about.

This is a much deeper playlist than I anticipated. Leaning very Alternative.
