Central Ohio Radio Off Air due to winds?

quick scan of the dial while I was out driving around..

88.3 WCDR Translator - OFF
91.5 WHKC - OFF
93.7 WQIO - Silent
101.9 WINF-LP OFF
103.1 WVKO OFF
103.5/104.3 Silent

That was when I checked a little around 6pm!

Tonight I talked to family members in Newark whose power has been out for nearly 6 hours. Those winds from Ike were fierce.

Over 12 hours now for parts of Reynoldsburg going without power. I knew those candles would come in handy.... now what did I do with the matches? ???

91.5 WHKC still off air, 95.1 WVXG has a silent carrier. Could not hear anything this morning on 1580 WVKO either just static.

Clear Channel, wilks and Saga stations all seem fine. It's suprising not more are down with the massive amounts of power failures, I suspect the fact most stations in columbus are centrally located helps..

Went by WVXG yesterday, Looks like the downlink dish is pointing a little more west than it should. Most likley not seeing signal. Solid carier from the station, just no programming.

103.5/104.3 Silent

WVKO-AM 1580 AM has been off since 3:00 PM yesterday. Their carrier retuned to the air at 9:00 PM with no audio. There were able to broadcast for a couple of hours this morning. They were on from 5:00 AM to 7:30 AM but they lost their studio feed around 7:30 AM and there has been just a carrier ever since. WVKO-AM claims to be your full service NEWS-TALK and Sports station. I don't think they had more then ten minutes of local news this morning.
There are News stations in Houston that managed to stay on the air full time despite being hit by a major Hurricane named IKE. Since we lost electricity, we had to listen to WTVN-AM for news and information about the Columbus power outage but that's no big deal because I'm a big BC fan anyway.
On the flipside, this means no Stephanie Miller and/or Big Eddie shows today which isn't good because they have many fans in Columbus.

I forgot to check 103.5/104.3. Thanks for the update....

You can add WDLR 1550 AM to the list as being silent and WCRX-LP/WCRS-LP 102.1 FM.

103.5 was back on about 9pm last night and I noticed audio back on 104.3 this morning.

89.1 WJJE deleware was off air for a bit last nite but back on now.

I cant tell but I think 1270 WUCO is also silent I heard another station with sports there over the static and could not hear them. (cant connect to their web stream either,I have a friend who lives up near their studios and is without power so I suspect they are off)

103.1 appears dark too (WVKO-FM)

101.9 WINF-LP (which I think transmits from the WDLR tower site off 36/37 is also dark)

91.5 WHKC still dark

Considering AEP is reporting 56.0% without power in Franklin county I think Media fared it well here by staying on air, I would not be suprised if some of the transmitter sites are running on Gen (I have not been down to that part of town to check)

Carrier on 105.5 FM in Washington Court House, 1250 is off-air there as well. Must have ran out of gas for their generator at the studios

oh yea! this is not radio related but I saw something interesting, on Riverside drive noth of 161 towards the Zoo Dublin City had little portable generators powering a few of the traffic signals!

91.5 WHKC is back on (Their on Ch6's tower I am suprised they had no carrier (Ch 6, 89.7 and 88.7 all remained on)... unless their transmitter shut off due to no STL link) --- or they don't pay ch6 to be on generator (I dont know if that area lost power or not)

WVKO-AM 1580 was off the air(just an open carrier) from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM yesterday but was on the air this morning. They had 30 more minutes of dead air on this morning broadcast.

95.1 WVXG programming came back online sometime between 9pm and 6am this morning.

As one of the major volunteers at WCRS (setting up programming Tuesdays and Thursdays, basic troubleshooting, on air announcements. Here is some info what happen to WCRS.

Sunday's Storm knocked out the power in Clintonville and thus the WCRS studio is also out of power. The power at the translator site was out as of Sunday. Remember this is community radio runs on fund-raising and volunteers. Heck the station now got two turntables to play vinyl. There are some local/indie groups puts out vinyl.

WVKO FM and AM are locally operated. Most LMA stations like WVKO AM and FM it is up to them for the upkeep of the station. The actual station owners want their cut of the station profits and their rent check. Like most LMA stations.

and for all the stations that did remain on the air, i only heard one that was worth anything. like most my power went out at 4pm sunday. still not back as of the writing of this. Sunday night i had a battery powered radio and wanted information. the ONLY people providing any was WTVN. Probably most of the rest didn't even have a live body in the building. Granted i did catch a bit of channel 6's 11 oclock news but that's not radio. is this what the licensees consider operating in the public interest?

At the times I was listening, WCBE 90.5 and AM 920 WMNI were giving updates in their local news segments. Other than Channel 6's Hourly updates and the ones I've just mentioned, I didn't notice any regular updates on the power outage situation.

Which brings a question to mind, when all the TV stations turn off their analog signal, will people still be able to hear Channel 6 on FM? Just wondering if WSYX has permission to continue this in 2009, as they brag about it all the time.

The TV on Radio slogan has been around a long time and is an artifact of the Channel 6 TV audio frequency being at the low end of the FM band, When they go 100% digital that audio goes away.
