Cerdic Maxwell's female ref comment on WEEI airwaves

For those who haven't heard (largely because the Celtics suck), WRKO analyst Cedric Maxwell made comments about a female ref that she should "go back to the kitchen" and "go in there and make me some bacon and eggs, would you?" after a controversial call during Monday night's C's broadcast which aired on WEEI. Now Jason Wolfe wants Maxwell to apologize before tonight's game. (FYI, this story is in today's Boston Herald's business section.)

Funny, I haven't heard Wolfe (or newlywed Julie, for that matter) demand an apology from D&C for their routine METCO Gorilla-type comments (i.e., Tom Brady's gay, Britney's a bimbo) or from Glenn Ordway and his crew for routinely saying that 90% of all New England Revolution soccer fans are illegal aliens (although I definitely believe that statement - no habla Ingles at Gillette Stadium!). ::)

One wonders if the higher ups no longer want "quality broadcasting" in the Boston area. I'm disgusted by the homophobia spewed on WEEI. Interesting that I don't find the need to tune in to WEEI much anymore...the other stations, as homogenized as they are, are not as offensive.

As bad as homogenization is, better to be homogenized than homophobic. Imagine if it can be determined that the femal ref dates women? The Big Show would get all the louder!

Perhaps Jason was just concerned that ‘Cornbread’ Maxwell was promoting such a high cholesterol meal?

Perhaps Maxwell forgot that women make up almost half the listening audience and perhaps make advertising decisions?

or perhaps it was a joke. Oh no a joke! Someone call the papers and the FCC.

Somewhere, Bill Haley (RIP) is laughing and singing, "Get back in that kitchen & rattle those pots & pans!"

of course it's a joke! I'm just say'n, entertainers (and program directors) have to remember who's in the audience and who's paying the bills. that's all.

I've got plenty of jokes that I think are funny that might offend people - one of which was sent to Siberia on this very board. But, the audience (or at least one of the editors) didn't (except for my pal SonicAl).

from Herald article:

>>WRKO-AM (650)

Oops, they got the freq wrong, those silly folks at the
Boston...Post :)

Who's REALLY on 650: http://www.wsro.com/

"You're listening to the Howie Carr show on WKRO (sic) in Boston"--then-Presidential
candidate Lamar Alexander, screwing up the calls...

Raccoon, Maxwell's joke was degrading. Bush has been caught in a war that he started, that served no purpose and which has killed more Americans than 9/11.

It's apples and oranges. So you are essentially saying that criticisms of a corrupt government are as incorrect as bashing a ref for their gender? What planet are you on?

Varulven, your heart's in the right place, but I don't think it's degrading - it's just a poor assessment of skill.

If you knew anything about my cooking you'd realize that I'm a much better ref than cook. :D Probably same for the ref in question!

I personally think this is mostly about getting people to pay attention to the Celtics. From this board, looks like it's working. So, everybody now - how dumb is Jason?

acc to Boston Radio Watch:
"Maxwell will not be fined or suspended by Entercom. Since, technically, he's a Boston Celtics employee, the team has not made any comment on his on-air remarks."

btw I neither defend nor attack Maxwell for his comments but am saying that pretty soon everyone will have to apologize for what they say because it's sure to offend someone.

I apologize for this post to anyone who may have been offended :)

Funny, Ordway says "By the way, we didn't receive one call from a female who was upset"

Um, doesn't he mean "We didn't let anyone on the air who disagreed"

you rarely hear women callers on WEEI... and whenever Allison from Cambridge calls the "Big Show," they dig out the tired sound effect of her band.

I don't think what Max said was meant to be literal... it was a very poor delivery... certainly not as bad as what Dennis and Callahan have said on their show.

I guess things need clarification:

Joke: A duck wants into a bar, orders a beer and says "Put it on my bill"

Not a joke: Making a derogatory statement that suggests women belong in the kitchen cooking.

I don't care if his schtick is to imitate Tommy Heinsen. If that is the case, he could have yelled out "That girl is ridiculous!" The bacon and eggs line, directed towards a woman is degrading. I don't care if it's a joke, or a schtick. It was wrong.

Now if Maxwell had said about a male ref "he belongs in the kitchen making bacon & eggs for me" he would be a hero.

Raccoon, has anyone brought up Lisa Olsen in this thread? You can mix and match, Cedric could talk about
Patriots' Missiles before sending her off to the kitchen...

"The word missile comes from the Latin verb mittere, literally meaning "to send"

That's nice. Make fun of a duck. What did the duck ever do to you? PETA tells me ducks have feelings too. Where do you work, so I can demand you lose your job. Duck hater.

what is the difference between what he said and dipetro said? I heard the comment about Grace Ross and thought it was funny(and agreed). There was nobody complaining. But, what if depietro were...a minority(black, gay), would he have been treated differently?
EEI is a joke. They defend who they are told to defend.
