CFL Broadcast Rights in the USA

As an American football fan who enjoys the CFL, I was wondering what the latest is on their plans
to air games here in the States.

Their website just says plans are TBD. It has said that every year for the past three up until
the season actually started. First they chose America One, which required me to haul out a coathanger
antenna to get it on a local UHF LPTV channel. Then they went to OneWorldSports, which I could get
on RSN's like MSG and Altitude on my dish.

Last year they chose the NFL Network, which only aired one game per week, and quickly dropped
them once the NFL preseason got into full swing. ESPN 3 was carrying some games later in the year.

Would be nice if they went into their season with a firm plan and could tell you where to look for them.

They could be waiting to see how much longer this NFL lockout farce lasts. If the NFL stays stuck in the muck much longer, the CFL will start looking interesting to a lot of outlets that wouldn't bother with it. There's history here.

When the NHL did its lockout and blew away an entire season in 2004-05, it threw away its national coverage on ESPN, which promptly boosted baseball coverage and went to alternate programming like the World Series of Poker. Hockey has never completely recovered.

The NFL risks doing the same, because networks running it will also find other programming that will draw perhaps lower ratings but also cost less. Fox can just air more major league baseball, CBS and NBC can turn to golf and movies, and ESPN, and independent stations that work with syndication companies and smaller nets like CW and MyTV, might just find some room for the CFL. That's why the CFL may be holding their cards close to the vest...if NFL training camps don't start on time and the season looks iffy, CFL games will find a lot more willing takers at a better price. Stay tuned...

i believe that the us broadcast rights to the CFL belong to NFL Network

That was certainly the case last season. But if that is their intent this year you'd think
the website would direct you to the NFL Network.

Looks like I got my answer.

According to CFL.CA they will have ten games on the NFL Network.
These will once again come to a screeching halt on Aug. 1 (by which time
they are surely hoping for a CBA to be in place and a full NFL preseason schedule)

(CFL games only really become meaningful in late September when there is frost on the
ground in Edmonton.)

On the positive side, assuming my internet connection stays fast enough, all of the
games will be available on ESPN3. But the guy who sold me my sports package for my
dish has got some 'splainin to do.

Thanks for the help!

Here on the Canadian side, Rogers cable has a Special sports pack they like to call the "NFL TICKET" for an extra 25 bucks a month!

You'd think there'd be a similar offer for Americans that want all the CFL games. (or at least the games of a specific team for slightly less)

The toughest thing to get used to is all that forward motion before the snap.
You keep looking for a flag and listening for a whistle that never comes.

OT---is there *any* link at all, to video of the famous "3-punt" play in a CFL playoff game? I was told it was 1972; I saw it only once when Warner Wolf had highlights on CBS' morning show. I can't find hide or hair of it. (Basically it had to do with the punting team trying to score a "single" in the last seconds of regulation in a tie game. It was one wild play. OR, I am hallucinating.)

Is THIS what you're talking about, or just real close? ;)

No, but eerily similar!! I saw the play in 1983 (but it was a 1972 playoff).....this one will suffice, until I see the '72 one again! That was a trip!

We've had varying CFL coverage over the years here in Northeast Ohio.

When America One had the games, I could twist the coathanger here as well to pick them up (through snow) on local A1 affiliate WAOH-LP 29 Akron/W35AX Cleveland. I get both channels about as bad, but terrain here favors 35 slightly.

NFL Network is not available in any form on Time Warner Cable, though it was on the system here when Adelphia owned it.

I dipped into a couple of the games last year when the NFL added a 24/7 NFL Network feed to the league's smartphone app (VZW/Android), but watching all that motion on a 3G smartphone connection was challenging at times.

This year, still no NFL network, but since I have TWC video service, I can watch ESPN3. I caught a few games that way, too.

Well, the CFL season here on American TV is about to draw to a close apparently.

Two of this past weekend's games are being re-broadcast today on NFL Network...
at midnight and 3AM Eastern!

They will run the Als at Argos live on Thursday night, and then a 1AM repeat
of Edmonton-Winnipeg on Saturday. And that appears to be it.

I liked it much better when they were on One World and you could pick up games
and rebroadcasts at various times on the RSN's on your dish.

ESPN3.com has a bunch of past and upcoming CFL games.

Of course, that isn't over-air broadcast, but those with broadband and access to ESPN3.com can see them (I'm in that group).

Yes, I have watched a couple of games on ESPN3. Though I can't expand it out to full-screen for some reason.
I think they are using an SD feed of a 16:9 HD broadcast that is being letterboxed in some way. Tough to watch
on my PC so guess I'll have to spring for the cables to watch it on the HD set.

and the NFL Network seems intent on showing us every NFL preseason game...beginning with a
Green Bay Packers scrimmage last night (yawn yawn yawn yawn!!)

They have added about a month's worth of CFL games to their posted schedule, but aside from
the Thursday night games they all appear to be tape-delayed broadcasts at 2 and 3 AM.

espn3.com. its worth it. The NFL dumped the last few live CFL games when the lockout ended.

Thank God America One is out of the picture. A local halftime show that was beneath even that of Wayne and Garths' local cable access show. Terrible.

And let's not bad mouth the defending Super Bowl and 13 time National Football League Champion Packers, shall we?

If you really want to experience what fandom is, thats the city and team to watch.

Nothing against the Pack. I'm in Pittsburgh and I have to agree they thoroughly
deserved that Super Bowl win. I would not want to see ANY team's scrimmage.
Nor am I a fan of the college spring games they are always showing.

I watched a little of the Edmonton-Winnepeg game around 6a on Sunday. Biggest frustration (besides Edmonton's play) was the NFL Network ticker covering up the score box from TSN. Didn't know the games were on ESPN3 - I'll check that out.
