Jay Campbell, longtime CFPL-TV London meterologist, will retire on October 16 after 28 years at the station.
One of the more humourous moments in his career occurred in January 1982, the day the CBC moved The National to 10 PM. In conjunction with the move CFPL revamped its FYI news presentation, and wanted Campbell to be present for the new newscast - even though he was stuck in Exeter due to a major snowstorm. The news director and cameraman Guy Goodwin took a news truck up to Exeter, struggling through the massive snowdrifts on Highway 4 to "rescue" him from Exeter so he could be on that night's FYI.
Campbell was always ready to help out local students, and in January 2002 I produced a 10-minute video for my high school science class which featured an interview of Campbell about his job and a tour of the weather area of the newsroom and the outdoor equipment. Back then he had an ambitous daily schedule, appearing on the New Day morning show, the noon news, and the 6 PM news - and yet he found the time to spend an hour between the noon and 6 PM newscasts for the interview and tour. One of these days I will get that video on Youtube.
