CFTO vs. Global

I'm posting this to the Toronto radio board instead of the Canadian TV board since this is specific to Toronto.

Background: For the past 35 years, CFTO has dominated the local news ratings. For the past couple decades, CITY usually occupied a somewhat distant second place, and third place was fought between CBLT and Global (CIII).

Over the past several years, CITY has dropped, and in the past year, Global has surged ahead, getting hot on CFTO's heels. On the week of November 7-13, 2005, CFTO News was watched by 281,000 viewers in the Toronto EM, and Global News was watched by 223,000 viewers.

So, what is it that is making Toronto viewers suddenly watch Global in such numbers that threaten CFTO? Why have viewers left CITY? Although I don't have access to CFTO here, I have watched Global, CITY, and CBLT recently and I found both CITY and CBLT provided far better coverage of Toronto news than Global.

I also can't help but wonder if CFTO and CITY will exploit Global's "Paris loophole" to win back lost advertising revenues.
______________

Simple answer: First news at 5:30 is getting tougher to notice the 6:00 mark.
The 6 o'clock headlines is new to global, I think, so lets see if people willingly stick when they see the 6 on the screen, or if they switch over now, but for the longest time, it was increasingly difficult to notice that it was infact 6 o'clock, as the news would overlap and/or blend in, so many 5:30 Global viewers didn't switch over.
(This is an opinion, not necessarily a fact)
______________
