Is channel 33 owned by Tribune? If so that's why they dropped the CW name. The new head of Tribune doesn't believe that The CW won't be around much longer and is dropping the CW name from its stations across the country including Channel 50 in Washington DC and Channel 20 in Hartford, Connecticut. The DC station went from being CW Washington to "DC 50". And Channel 20 in Hartford switched from CW 20 to "TXX". The call letters on that station are WTXX.

It is kind of werid Tribune is doing this. The only Tribune owned channel still calling themselves CW is CW 11 WPIX. As they call their news CW 11 News, its on their chopper, etc. I don't see why they don't just stay with The CW logo on all of their channels this as why do they want to waste money on a new logo when they just made these CW logos not to long ago. Plus on the Tribune websites that are for their CW networks promote the new CW shows like 90210. You don't want to be called CW but you want to air their shows still. Just keep calling your networks The CW.

From their "About Us" tab...

KDAF-TV, "The 33" broadcasts to the Dallas/Fort Worth area, the fifth largest media market in the United States with over 2.4 million households, and over 6.5 million people. The DFW Metroplex is the fastest-growing, youngest... and we think coolest major market in the country. That's why we all live here, right?

KDAF is also one of the most successful television operations in the Tribune Broadcast Company station group. Tribune owns several newspapers, and over twenty-five television stations across the nation, including WGN in Chicago, KTLA in Los Angeles and WPIX in New York.

I'm not sure why this is on the radio board.. but let me expand on what MarcB was saying: the new head of Tribune simply does not like the CW. The network charges an arm and a leg to run their programming. The ratings are bad and don't fit with Tribune's goal of expanding local news. Whether the CW goes away or not is irrelevant. It is very possible Tribune will drop the CW from its stations in the next year or so if things don't improve dramatically.

So what would replace the CW? Look at what Tribune has done with WGN in prime time and KDAF on Saturday nights for a possible clue.
WGN is running a bunch of old sitcoms and some canadian imports. They have a few movies and lots of sports too.
I have no idea what KDAF would do, but I'd bet it would include a similar combination of shows. The funny thing is, they get better ratings with I Love Lucy repeats on Saturday night than they do on most nights of CW programming. Lucy is dirt cheap programming making it very profitable. It also attracts a better viewer as a lead-in to news.

KDAF has recently hired a new news director who used to be the news director at WFAA. They are considering adding a morning show next year. There's pretty good evidence this guy is going to completely overhaul their on-air staff and look. They really need it.

Tested, the WGN angle is due to that being the national feed, the local WGN9 is running CW programming and thats due to a bit of a spat concerning that around the beginning of the WB network.

When you top-rated show for the week (WWE Smackdown) jumps ship to MyNetwork TV, you know theres problems. Most of the tribune-based affiliates will probably drop the programming after the end of the TV season, as the product, Save 90210/Gossip Girl/Supernatural is pretty pathetic. Those programs will find another home, most likely in syndication or cable. The Legacy stations (WGN/KTLA/WPIX) have already dropped or will be dropping the CW label probably by the beginning of 2009, which is never a good sign.

Keep in mind Tribune is being ran by the much despised Randy Michaels ,he who got Clear Channel to gobble up stations, homoginized formats ,gobbled up billboards and gave radio a poison pill. He's doing the same to Tribune. Ask the employees current and former of the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times.

Yes, I'm well aware of that. I was just suggesting that the national feed might offer some insight into what other Tribune stations might do post-CW.

I'm going to be very interested to see what happens to the ratings after the WWE audience moves over to MYNetworkTV.
I'd bet that My Network will rise to about a 1.0 in national ratings. It's been hovering in the 0.6-0.8 range for a while. (although it had a very off week last week with a 0.4) CW will probably fall to about a 1.5-1.7.

Kinda like CBS still has a talk station in L.A. calling itself "Free-FM"...

I was pleasantly surprised to see Rebecca Miller doing weather last (Sunday) night on 33 News.

What happened to "the WB", and what is the deal with CW/My Network TV? I lost a few shows when they flipped, and we lost an affiliate here in Waco KAKW 62, which flipped to a spanish station. I miss the WB/KAKW

I know KXXV was running CW shows in post-late night (12a-3a) for awhile..

I have a feeling that was a try out for Rebecky ;), as the new news director is wanting to take 33 into different directions with its newscasts, in particular with an AM show. I also think Crespo and Friends will be sent packing come the new year, as most of these folks just havent worked out with the Dallas viewer..
