Ch. 7 translator in Allentown

I'll be heading to the Lehigh Valley area to see a psychologist tomorrow. I have a Walkman which I can listen to TV audio chs.2-13 along with AM/FM stations. I am curious that the ch. 7 translator, which re-broadcasts WNEP-TV in the Scranton - Wilkes-Barre area totally covers the Allentown area, which is not part of the Scranton market.

Anyone who lives in the Allentown/Bethlehem area does anyone ever watch WNEP on Ch. 7 over-the-air?

I'll post a response once I get back.

I believe its a maneuver for WNEP, the only Scranton channel to remain on cable in the area.

The way the cable regulations read - The cable companies have to carry the closest network affiliate of a given network, putting CH.7 as the closest ABC station there. When it comes to the big four networks, It doesn't matter if its a low power channel.

The low power rule for networks favors stations such as WBND-LP(ABC) South Bend, IN DMA, preventing the cable system from dropping the low power ABC in favor of a distant ABC, which won't compete in the local advertising revenue business.

As for WNEP in Allentown - it might be a way for the Allentown area to keep atleast one Scranton, PA TV station on the cable lineup. Note, however, it's carried up on CH.60 or so on the lineup, not in the lower dial, where 3, 6, 10 and 29 are located, thus, not significantly denting CH.6's viewership in the Lehigh Valley.

Actually on Service Electric Cable TV in the Lehigh Valley, WNEP-TV is now on Channel 19, where is used to be on Channel 62. RCN still has WNEP-TV on Channel 58. WBRE was carried on both cable systems in the valley but was dropped a few years back due to that there was already NBC10 from Philly and NBC 4 from NYC. My guess is that NBC who owns both WCAU and WNBC asked the cable companies to drop WBRE. To answer your question about receiving WNEP on Ch. 7 in Allentown. At my girlfirends house in Bethlehem (5 miles from Allentown) she has no cable in her room so we have to watch tv with an indoor antenna and you can't barley even get a picture or sound on Ch. 7 although I could just make out the picture with WNEP's Logo. On the other hand, I could get WNEP's main channel on CH. 16 clear as a whistle and also WBRE and WYOU very clear. WVIA and WOLF don't come in that good and I don't even recieve WSWB or WQPX at all.
