ch. 8 starting a 5:30 p.m. show

That's what I've heard. Haven't heard a start date -- probably September, I'm guessing. That's when contracts for shows like Inside Edition typically run out.
I'll miss Inside Edition--much more entertaining than another half-hour of local news. At least it was counter programming.

Has 8 ever done an hour-and-a-half block at 5 p.m.?

8 attempted such a venture back in the mid-90's when they tapped meteorologist Kevin Williams (can you believe that!) to ANCHOR the 5:30pm show. BIIIIIIIIIGGGGG mistake. It was probably the worst thing I'd ever seen at the time. It was scrapped after a few months. Like all the stations in this town, what is old is new again. I think Ch 13's adopted the old Ch 8 "11 at 11" model that they used in the early 90's. All the news, weather, and sports commercial free in the first 11 minutes. It was a good program for a while, but then the sales department griped because the advertisers weren't being satisfied after viewers turned the channel at 11:12p. Ah well, such is news.....

Channel 9 in Syracuse has done "11 at 11" for a long time, probably 10+ years. If people are turning the channel at 11:12, it's because they're filling the rest of the show with junk. You still need some good, teaseable content later in the show to keep people locked in.

Of course, making sure things like First WX and First Sports don't give away too much are also helpful.

Wonder who's going to staff the additional half hour effort.

I'm sure Nexstar is beating the bushes right now to bring in additioanl producers, anchors, reporters and shooters.

Very simple answer. The shooters will be recruited from Avenues A and B in the city. Reporters, producers and anchors will be graduates from the Columbia School of Broadcasting.

Ah yes, because I forgot that Rochester is such a big market that stations should hire the cream of the crop with a ton of experience and not reporters who have experience from a smaller market. I am sure people would just die to be able to work at any of the affiliates here in our big market.

I've personally witnessed enough careers die on Rochester TV in the past three decades that I should have opened a cemetery for broadcasters. Damn I could have made a fortune selling plots. ::)

Channel 8 is really stretching their news staff thin aren't they?
Perhaps Nexstar figures that people are just getting home around 5:30 from work so lets air an additional 1/2 hour more of rehashed news from the previous day, or early morning. I personally think the real reason for this decision, if it's true, is to sell more commercial time.

As if there was any doubt.
