Ch-Ch-Ch-Chanes in San Luis Obispo...

Shocked I haven't seen anything on here about it yet...

any thoughts on the new directions of both Coast 101.3 and Q-104.5?

Coast seems to have gone completely Hot AC... a format that has never worked in this market.

and Q-104.5 seems to be chasing 95.3 The Beach now.

COAST evolved their format back in the Spring, we'll see after another book how it plays out. 10+ years of heritage as the "softest place to fall" down the drain. Certainly leaves a huge hole in the market if anyone wanted to put on a gold-based AC.

Q pretty much sounds the same, though they've let some of the true "oldies" format records go. The Beach has evolved from being an eclectic classic rocker this past Spring, into a very broad-based classic "hits" station.

The most consistent, and IMHO, the best sounding station in town is KURQ.

Couldn't disagree with you more.

KURQ changed directions a few times in the course of this book.

Early on went very alternative again... (was hearing stuff like No Doubt, Incubus, Offspring)...

towards the end of the book returned to a very active rock sound (not playing about 70% of the current Alternative chart)

They lost some jocks and syndicated weekend stuff... (personally I miss Scratch and Sniff)

But, all their numbers come from Bob & Tom... so I'm sure they'll be fine.

Consistant stations: KZOZ, Wild, The Beach, and KJUG.

Pretty much everything that used to be owned by CC underwent massive format changes.

To say that all of KURQ's numbers come from Bob & Tom isn't accurate. Certainly it couldn't have been #1 in the past without a huge shot in the arm because of B&T but when it was #1 it had great numbers in the other dayparts as well. As you've seen in this last book Bob & Tom still had great numbers but the station took a significant hit. KURQ could do well even without Bob & Tom (probably not nearly as dominating as it had been in the past though) if it was programmed well.

HA... correct. "IF" it was programmed well... which it isn't.

Although I agree with Kim...it's not just the station, it's the format overall. It happened to mainstream AOR in the 70s/80s, and now it's happening again, this time with Active Rock.

Active Rock hit the end of it's shelf life about 18 months ago. Since then KROQ in L.A. is about the only Alt/Active Rock station on the coast that's held steady (ex: KURQ, KJEE, KIOZ, KRAB all down from a year ago).

Alot has changed since this format starting blowing up 10 years ago...but now its spinning it's wheels, with it's original P1 core growing up and out of the likes of the new music being offered today. As classic rock is evolving into the next stage of the 'oldies' format, active rock needs to evolve into their generation's 'classic' rocker.

With a slight tweak in KURQ's library/rotations and a new concept for it's imaging/positioning, it could regain it's position at the top of the ratings (while wounding KZOZ as it did with it's original debut in 90's).
