Ch-ch-ch-changes for WKYC newscasts

Dr Phil is playing out the string at 1p.

Channel 3 in the morning and afternoons is going from the traditional two-anchor newscasts to more of an ensemble where they can give the headlines off the top, and then flow into being somewhat of a chatfest.

By moving NBC News Daily to 3p (the network provides live feeds every hour during the afternoon), WKYC now basically has a 4 1/2 hour news block from 3 until 7:30p (factoring in NBC national news).

Notice they got away from the cutesy-fartsy "What's Now", "What's New" etc. names and just call them "3 News at 4", etc.

Notice also they broke up Russ Mitchell and Laura Caso. Maybe it's just me, but they never seemed to really gel. Remember, when Caso first started it was right at the start of the pandemic, and they were separated (Russ at the desk, Caso in the newsroom), and then when things began loosening up they anchored together at the desk, but a lot of times had the giant flat screen between them, then eventually they did the traditional set up, but something - and again it could be just me - just seemed off.

Keep in mind that Caso came in while Sara Shookman was still at WKYC. Eventually, Shookman would leave the station.

I noticed that the 4pm and 5pm anchor teams have also split up and have been reassigned. Christi Paul and Betsy Kling are getting more duties on the after and evening news.

The biggest news out of the changes is Kling getting the 11pm co-anchor slot for good.

I saw that the cutesy names for the morning, 7pm and 11pm news are staying out. My guess is the ratings are good. The ones changing to "3News at ___" must have been struggling.

I wonder how much longer Russ Mitchell is going to continue as a news anchor? He's in his mid-60s now. Perhaps it might be time for him to step away from the daily grind and into a different role.

I'll be honest, I didn't think he'd be here as long as he has.

When he first came in 2012, I figured he'd be here a couple of years max until snagging a national gig (remember he came to channel 3 after a long stint at CBS News).

But instead he became a fixture in town, as this is his 12th year manning the desk at Tom Beres Way (the portion of Lakeside named for WKYC's longtime - and recently retired - political reporter).

Basically at this point, he's in "call his own shot" territory regarding how far/long he wants to keep going.

I've watched the 7:00 pm show a few times and it seems like Donovan and Caso are hitting it off quite well.

They also broke up Jay Crawford and Betsy Kling as well. Both initially anchored the 5pm newscast and eventually moved to 4pm. I thought they were good together.

The 5pm news seemed to have had too many anchors on one show. One half-hour had four anchors, the second had the 6pm team. It was too confusing.
