Chad Zumock / Alan Cox

I was listening to Chad Zumock's podcast recently and while he has said very little about his departure from WMMS publically, he did note that Alan has now admitted to "firing" Chad.

Was this known before? I thought it was a corporate CC thing. When was this supposed admission on Alan's part? Was it on the air, if so when, and is the audio available?

It was during a segment called "Trying to be Politically Correct" on 6-17. If you go to the podcast page, and look for that segment, it starts at 18:40 when a listener asks Alan about Chad.

This still a topic of interest? The release of a second-banana?

From what I understand, the ratings have gone down hill pretty quick since Chad's departure. Am I wrong on that? I haven't seen them, but from what I have heard from some that have seen them this is the case. If so, than its a story, isn't it?

Thanks for tip. I found the segment listed under 6/19/13.

The show is tanking fast with the new "comedian." You can knock Chad for many things, but he would make for decent radio sometimes and would get into it with Alan. Bill Squire is hardly even a "second mic" at this point. He rarely chimes in and the only decent bits they do are holdovers from when Chad was on the show.

You're welcome. Glad to be of assistance.

I was surprised he even admitted to making that decision.

The show has gotten boring. Not the same type of energy it used to have with Chad. Bill's a good standup, but doesn't seem to stand out. I feel he's being wasted on 'MMS. Maybe's he still settling in, but he's been on for months now. Erika's become more of a co-host than Bill is. Heck, her name came before Alan's in the description for the bar crawl gallery on the show's page. She's definitely gotten a lot more airtime after Chad was gone.

The bits and YouTube videos have become forgettable too. Speaking of, tons of videos with Chad were removed. His part of the group shot was pasted over by one of Bill on the 'MMS FB page cover photo and of course, he's cropped out of all the show pictures on the station website. To me that's a very tacky way of deleting Chad as if he never existed. I have a feeling Alan won't be in Cleveland forever as he'll likely head to a bigger market.

DL, Whoever has quoted a drop in the ratings doesn't know how to read Arbitron. Numbers-wise, the show hasn't missed a beat with the departure of Zummick. It's definitely a different tone to the show, but is much more organically funny without the random outbursts from before. Squire still definitely seems to be getting his feet wet. Besides, cohosts change in this business all the time. Ratings change when a host is replaced, not a second or third string member. If Chad had been that big of an element in the success of Cox's show, he would have been scooped up elsewhere on the dial. You'll notice that hasn't happened.

Chad talked about his no-compete (which Clear Channel was set to enforce). I think it was 6 months. And really, there are only two other companies he could get snatched up by, CBS and Good Karma. Not like there's a bunch of opportunities there.

You may find it "organically funny," but I personally find it boring as hell. If the show is success, hats off to them. Unfortunately, I can't sit through Cox's show without getting annoyed by anything coming out of Erika's mouth or Bill adding nothing to the show. My personal opinions. Willing to agree to disagree. Enjoy the show. I'll tune tune in elsewhere.

question - and it's an honest one ... if you're out and out fired, as Chad was. Do the non-compete still hold up? I mean - doesn't termination sort of void any contractual obligations?

Alan Cox won't be missed if he heads to another market as far as I am concerned. I was so glad to turn on the Spew today and have Bob Frantz back. Last week was absolutely brutal with Nolan and Cox.

Technically, Zumock wasn't fired. His contract was up and they chose not to renew it. Paying out the remaining time on a contract keeps the non-compete in place.

Is there a difference between being fired and not having a contract renewed? I thought a non-renewal meant was another option to fire someone.

Back to subject, if Alan ever does leave Cleveland and WMMS, maybe Squire should join Rover's show and replace Dumb and Jeffrey. He would fit it very well I think.

Fired means the remainder of the contract is usually nullified (for specific cause). Non-renewal simply requires payout of whatever remains in the terms of the initial deal.

I listened to this and Alan does contradict himself based on what he said initially. When Chad was first let go he definitely hinted that it was a CC/WMMS decision and that he had no part in it. He even joked about Chad un-friending him on Facebook, saying "I'm not sure why he is mad at me, I didn't have anything to do with it.". One thing that was consistent in the story was that the DUI was a final straw. Apparently there were numerous issues with Zumock since he started on the show. Overall though I think the show has suffered since he left. While he was annoying and likely a d*** off the air, he did make things more interesting. If anything, he had a gift for getting Erika fired up and flustered.

Chad is featured in the new issue of Cleveland Magazine talking about his podcast. He doesn't mention much of Alan, but it was a brief article so there must not have been a lot of room.

The clip in CLE Mag is a hoot. At the very least, you have to appreciate his commitment to delusion. Anyone who spent any amount of time with that show could realize pretty quickly that its success wasn't based in Zumock's abilities. If by "bits" he means mangling basic english, making fun of rednecks and calling people "queers", then I guess he has a point.
