Challenging Mix 96.9

I think it's time for somebody to step up to the plate and challenge Mix in the Hot AC format. With all this competition with the Rhythmic CHR stations, Mix is left untouched with no real challenge at all of being over taken by anybody. This station has been bland for way too long now. In my view, poor imaging, and extremely slow when it comes to adding new music to their playlist. Too much of their focus is on 90's recurrents and the 80's songs that they throw in. By now, I think the 80's music should have been dropped from the playlist.

I was very excited when Hot 97.5 first came on during Christmas of 2010. I loved their Hot AC direction, and the fact that they were willing to play songs that Mix wasn't. If only they would have stayed with this format, instead of morphing back into a Top 40 again. I would love to see another station make an attempt at a Hot or Modern AC and go after mix. KPKX, KEXX, or KAJM maybe?? It would be great to see one of those, or another station make the flip with a focus on the Hot and Modern AC tracks from the 2000's up through today! Somebody definately needs to put a scare into Mix, as they are very boring to listen to.

If memory serves, this has already been done.

For a short time roughly a decade ago, KZON was a station that played more or less the same music as Mix, but with personality and imaging that was far more entertaining.

I enjoyed KZON back then when it was The Zone. I just wish somebody would step up today to battle against Mix. They obviously feel there is nothing to really change or tweak about their format, so they just leave everything the same. I can't remember the last time the imaging was changed, or when they actually had entertaining jocks to listen to. It would be great for someone to come along and try a more current based Modern AC since Mix relies heavily on recurrents along with 80's and 90's songs. This is all played out, would be nice to see a change.

If you were Mix, would you change? I mean, they're consistenly at the top, so why? Obviously they are doing something right.

As for their jocks, I enjoy Bryan Allen on Phil Steiner. Who else is on the station?

Hmm...haven't seen Bryan Allen on Phil Steiner. Maybe I'm missing out on something.

Well McDonald's is consistently at the top. They're obviously doing something right...right? Clear Channel is like the McDonald's of radio...they keep pumping out Big Macs and people keep buying Big Macs, so there is apparently no need to change the formula of two mostly beef patties, bland sauce, lettuce, approximately cheese, and other microwaved ingredients on a sesame seed bun. McDonald's proved that if you put out a generic product that is cheap enough to overcome it's other obvious shortcomings, and you saturate the market with the product, you can be successful.

Part of the appeal of the Big Mac is that no matter where you are in the world, that burger tastes the same.

Yet radio isn't a burger. Radio isn't even a food product. Radio is entertainment. Or at least it used to be.

I'm not asking for Mix to change. I'm just thinking that since we are going to take full advantage of this competitive market, someone might as well compete with and somewhat duplicate the Mix 96.9 format, but with more adult top 40 variety than Mix. I think Hot 97.5 had the right idea in the beginning. I like Hot 97.5's current idea of all new hit music without any old school or recurrents, but with KZZP and KZON in existence with KKFR somewhat touching on some of the top 40 sound, I wouldn't mind "giving up" Hot 97.5 to make room for an adult top 40 format that's a little hipper than Mix 96.9 (either at 97.5 or somewhere else on the dial). Maybe an adult top 40 could still work without removing any of the other existing chr style formats (the same way KBIG still survives in the rhythmic top 40 flooded L.A. market), but something tells me that adding an adult top 40 without flipping any of the current chr's would be a little too much. It wouldn't make sense to flip KZON, and I doubt KZZP would be flipped to make room for a station to compete with Mix 96.9, so I can only "pick on" Hot 97.5 - not because I necessarily want to get rid of them, but it's the only sensible station out of the chr pack to sensibly pick on and hypothesize a format change with.

I first noticed this maybe two months ago on Mix's website, but they had changed their slogan from "80's, 90's, and Today" to "90's To Now". What I found odd about this, was that with the exception of hearing a jock mention the new slogan one time, I have not heard it again since. Not only that, but they don't even have any sweepers or imaging that reflects the new slogan on their site. I always wanted Mix to drop the 80's songs, as I felt that it was time for them to start pushing more current modern ac hits. Listening off and on though over the last couple of weeks though, I was still hearing 80's music being played. For fun, I went over to yes.com to check out their playlist from the other day to see how many 80's songs were being played. In a full day, I found about 23 80's songs being played on the station, and even 2 from the 70's! What is the point of trying to position yourself as "90's To Now" if you are still playing these tired old 80's songs?? Just another reason for somebody else to come along and off an alternative to Mix that focuses more on current hot ac/adult top 40 hits.
