Change coming to KTBB-FM

Tyler's 92.1 is going with ESPN starting September 6th. So what happens with 1490 AM?

Haven't you heard? 1490 is going Spanish sports.

No, I missed that memo, or Tweet, or whatever...

I heard 600am was going ESPN and all the shows from 600 were moving to 92.1?? So which is it?

Oh man, that would be such a BAD idea. The 92.1 signal is small and 600 AM is a HUGE signal. His line-up of Beck/Limbaugh/Hannity is a cash cow.

I don't even really see why you would bother to move ESPN to 92.1 FM. The 1490 signal is a comparable size to 92.1 and sports doesn't need the audio fidelity of FM. I think a well run music format with a LOCAL focus (like swap shop, police reports, etc.) would do so much better on that signal.

My prediction... ESPN on 92.1 will... make no difference.

Sadly nothing has made a difference on 1490 since, well, since it was KDOK. And it died from FM competition and a signal that struggles to clear the city limit signs.

From what I understand is that 92.1 and 1490 will basically swap formats. ESPN Sports will go to 92.1 as the new "Sports Talk 92.1", and 1490 will get what is on 92.1 right now. For the most part, the A lineup of talk shows is already on 600 and 92.1 gets the B lineup.

92.1 and 1490 do not have comparable signals. 92.1 gets out about 50 miles 24/7. 1490's daytime signal gets out about 25 miles and at night they are lucky to get 10 miles.

I dont know if anyone remembers but 100.3 in the KXAL (Hunt Broadcasting) days, was an ESPN sports station on FM. Its signal was the Longview equivalent of 92.1. It struggled and never got above a 0.3 share.

"Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it".

Of course Waller with 103.1 had the first FM talk in East Texas. It was also programmed by Mooreland, and its ratings were the same as 99.3 are today.

I'm still thoroughly surprised no one in East Texas has bothered re-taking the Oldies Format.
There's only a lucky few who can manage to get KLUV or 97.7

I thought that 6 months ago 99.3 was prime for a format change to classic hits. But now with the news that they are the Dallas Cowboys new affiliate in the market and 92.1's format change to sports talk, it seems that 99.3 plans on keeping the talk format for a while. Time will tell and we will see where 92.1 and 99.3 are in a couple of years.

Granted 92.1's signal in no way could be confused with KNUE or KYKX, but I don't agree with 600kogo's comparison of 92.1 and 100.3's signals. 100.3 struggles in Longview during tropo. I am in Tyler quite often and have never had the same issues with 92.1's signal in the city. If you compare the FCC 60 dBu service contour maps of the 2 stations you will see that Longview is on the NW edge of the contour of 100.3's signal while Tyler is right smack dab in the middle of 92.1's contour. 92.1 is in a much better position signal wise in Tyler than 100.3 is in Longview. Nothing has worked on 100.3, but I hope that Chuck can continue with his efforts on that frequency.

For the most part, I get listenable reception of 92.1 in Longview when tropo is not blasting in. The main problem is tropo and that in the NE part of Gregg County, 91.9 from Jefferson starts to take over.

BTW, if you are referring to KALK (K-LAKE) 97.7 out of Winfield, I think that is an outstanding classic hits station! I can get them on my Realistic DX-390 when I adjust the antenna "just right." I wish that they had a better signal in Longview.

Theres also KWRW on 97.7 that has a weak presence in Tyler broadcasting a Classic Hits Format.

Maybe if those two would merge to make one big Class C ;)

I thought 99.3 already had the B line-up of talk shows... :D

Maybe Chuck should LMA 92.1 from Gleiser. I think the signals from 100.3 and 92.1 compliment each other perfectly.
It could be like "The Blaze" and "The Breeze"... "The QX-FM"

Maybe Gleiser should try an entirely new direction on 1490... 24/7 News?

I bet the old KDOK-FM with a local DJ staff made more money for Gleiser even near the end than KTBB-FM does with syndicated programs. In bigger markets the only time a newstalk FM has done well is when it's simulcasting the AM 100%.

Flipping 92.1 was a bad decision when KDOK's Classic Hits format could have survived with some tweaking (a faster paced sound and a new Jingle package would have worked wonders), more promotion and a broader playlist.

It's a huge WIN for 99.3 getting the Cowboys, and I think the moving of SportsTalk to 92.1 is to prevent 99.3 from flipping, and the moving of 92.1's "b" syndicated programs to 1490 is to keep 99.3 from getting them.

Yeah, I had forgotten about KWRW. I had thought that they had switched to spanish as I sometimes receive spanish language programming on that frequency. I am not sure where that is coming from, mabye tropo coming in from south Texas.

KWRW has some programming in Spanish on the weekends, and although I don't know the history of it, I do recall that they've been doing for quite a few years. They also have a translator in Palestine on 103.9.

I had suggested years ago that Gleiser LMA 100.3 to give KDOK-FM a better signal in Longview. I even sent him an email through his website suggesting such.

Didn't Gleiser attempt to buy 100.3, 103.1 or both stations just a few years ago? I agree getting 100.3 would have complimented 92.1's signal. Too late now!
