Change in Congress- what does this mean?

Anyone care to comment on what effect the election results will have on the industry?

I have my doubts there will be any legislated changes in the radio industry as a result of the change in the US Congress. It is unlikely they will do anything that might try to break up the consolidation that followed 1996.

Talk radio will certainly have lots to talk about in the next two years - with battles between the leadership of the House and the White House, and the start of the 2008 Presidential Campaign.

I think we all know what it means.....somebody will flip to Oldies! And Don Rumsfeld will be the PD.
Or somebody won't.

Rummy as PD...might just work. You hafta give the guy credit, he actually made it 6 years with Dems gunning for him 24/7.

Don't want to get too political on these boards, but I don't have to hand anything to Rummy. Good riddance!

New life for WSJS. They needed some fresh blood and they will have lots to talk about in 2007.

More bad news for small town radio. I recently heard COL changes are now a minor change, instead of amending the Table of Allotments.

But wasn't there a recent article in Radio World about Pelosi getting in Copp's face about ownership caps - suppressed reports, etc? Seems like I remember her promising there was gonna be an FCC internal investigation...who knows, it may be SSDD.

I'd love it to mean a re-examination of consolidation, relaxation on the stupid indency fines (some of what Stern said may have warranted a fine, but an episode of "Cold Case", or heaven forbid a little "real" unedited language in a damn news report? GIVE ME A BREAK!) How about stating that a station can't be fined for what a LISTENER says during a call-in show? Something to ENCOURAGE, rather than suppress the free flow of ideas. A radical concept!

Oh, and how about at least looking into a requirement for local news coverage!!!!! Just a thought. Remember how radio got caught with pants-at-half-mast after 9/11 when all they had to offer was music, and all people wanted was news and information! OOPS! A little encouragement of stations and groups to actually SERVE THEIR COMMUNITIES would be welcome to me. Or am I just old fashioned to think that "operating in the public interest" was a good thing?

I'm not in favor of bringing back the fairness doctrine, but hey...THREATENING to do it might spur someone somewhere to think about a little balance in talk programming! Just a few thoughts!
