Change is Coming to Conservative Talk Radio

If this quote from CC honcho and WLW's Darryl Parks is any indication, This is from his Facebook page, via a tip on the Buffalo board:

"What I think #4. This is directed to my associates in talk radio. Life as you know it changed tonight. If you continue with the shrill act and constantly talk politics focusing on an ever shrinking ultra partisan audience, choosing to exclude instead of include, your future in the medium is bleak."
[/quote]

I think the Angry Old white Guy talk which is the Mainstay of Talk Radio is going the way of The Dodo Bird. The Demo is too old.

Yes and no. It s all cyclical.. Dr Laura rose to fame in the last post partisan phase. I don't doubt we are there again but remember... Rush was at his best at this very same time. Why? HE knew the meaning was not politics, the meaning was engagement and entertainment. Partisan hacks will fall by the wayside. Great hosts will be fine

And lo and behold, Sean Hannity and Charles Krauthammer (who's not a talk-show guy but is a Fox News Channel regular) have had an epiphany on immigration in the last 24 (probably closer to 12) hours. Think it's related? Naaaaaahhhhh! ;D

The writing on the demographic walls is too large for the right to ignore if they want to stay relevant. The next generations of voters and media consumers will be increasingly less homogeneous, and all aspects of media and culture will change accordingly.

This has been a long time coming. Romney's loss on Tuesday night was the beginning of the end for extreme right-wing radio and TV. The entire Republican party right now is in trouble b/c they relied on the same "rich old white guys" for way too long to run for office. They party has to either evolve or become irrelevant and die off. Yes, I am an unabashed Liberal, but even if this was happening within the Democratic party, I would say the same thing. Everything, whether politics or anything else, must evolve and change with the times. Blowhards like Rush, and even worse Donald Trump, are giving the Republican party a bad name.

Sorry pal you are dreaming. Conservative radio goes away when people stop listening.. Yes credibility was lost. But listenership was not. Check the ratings in 6 months then post.

A lot of of the talkers lost credibility that night.

The handwriting has been on the wall for a long time. Tuesday night, the secret formula was spayed on the wall and the writing was revealed.

Things may not change much in 6 months, but let's see what the audiences are in 4 years, when even more of their bitter, angry, old, white audience has passed on.

Like this is the first time I've heard a lib claim that conservative talk radio is dead. Usually comes up about once every four years. Still going strong. Hey, how's that Air America working out for you?

As it stands unless things change, I could see most of the AM Band pass on to brokered programming Spanish and Religious Broadcasters in 4 yrs.

I didn't say it was dead, I said it was in trouble. Like everything, they need to evolve, just like the Republican party itself, i.e. appeal to a wider audience. Once again, I never listened to Air America radio.

Give an ear to Burnie Thompson. He is out of Florida (on 15 stations, there). He beats Rush, Adults 25-54 on some stations is will launch his daily, Noon to 3PM show next month. Right now, you can find him online.
Its a different type of Conservative talk radio.

Of course the proof of Park's conviction on all this will be in how will the stations under his guidance sound in 6 months or a year vs today. Have they painted themselves into a shrill shrill act that constantly talks politics focusing on an ever shrinking ultra partisan audience, choosing to exclude instead of include corner?

And that includes everyone from local hosts to the Limbaughs'/Beck's and Schult's/Maddow's.

Ratings do not always equal revenue as in the case of many formats that no longer exist. The format is getting old and if it continues as it is, it will no longer attract advertisers, therefore go the way of MOYL, 50's 60's Oldies, Smooth Jazz, and EZ listening have. Darryl Parks understands this which is why He posted what He did on his Facebook page.

I have. Same old hackery. One line past Rusty Humphries on the hackometer. Most of those 15 stations are in smaller markets and/or run him on odd hours on the weekends when they haven't sold all their time for infomercials. His home base is Panama City, where he does well, but that's not the largest or most representative market in Florida by far. The big talkers downstate haven't touched him. I noticed that even though he's based in Florida, he never talks about politics in Florida, where conservatives control everything, and where frankly they've made a mess of everything, including... again... voting.

It could get really interesting. I had heard of him and heard him when i was in the Sunshine State. The other Floridian that needs to go national is Barsky. Heard on the James Crystal Big Talk, 850, in the Miami area.
Although our dance card is full in Cincinnati, Burnie may work in Lexington...

IMHO all forms of talk radio could be in trouble within a decade. My wife's niece really talks, she texts. We tried to call her to get picture of her new baby. She never checks voice mail. My wife texted her and with a minute pictures and now text messages and photos from her phone multiple times a day. Try to have a conversation with an under 20. A huge percentage can not. But they can text a storm!
