Change Needed at WCKX Power 107.5 FM

Let me first say that this station is not 100% bad although it needs some dramatic changes and the PD needs to open his ideas up further or be dismissed from his duties. I try to be realistic and hope that if someone currently works for or with this station do not take it personally. Plus, it is just my thoughts and as like everyone else my thoughts can not be viewed at all is that is the case.

1.) Paul Strong (Aka Paul Long) needs to go. His one minded thoughts are being expressed more and more on the air. If you listent to the station you will understand were I am coming from. He needs to go back to Kentucky were he came from and maybe he might be excepted there on their local station.

2.) Quit playing the same songs every hour. My goodness, I know there has to be more R&B, Hip-Hop music than the 20 you play each hour. (Ok, maybe every 2 hours I'll give them that.

3.) The afternoon jock (B-Slim) is like listening to someone in middle school. I met him in person and he is at least in his mid 20's and acts like he is a teenager. He has no respect for the people he works with. (Observed at other events)

4.) Their previous jocks (will not mention) took prize money from listeners and should of been terminated when he was caught but he was slapped on the hand and kept his spot. (must of been a ratings thing) Now he is in Detroit making it big I believe. No hard feelings against him but stealing should not be excepted.

5.) This station has made numerous comments about other races that should not be excepted by the listening group or the FCC. Some comments heard from morning, and afternoon jocks were, "To many white people listen to us", Mexicans need to go over to 103.1 were they are needed. I'll keep the other comments off the board for respect to the members.

6.) When they broadcast from a customer's store or location they disrespect their listners. Unreal!!! RESPECT PEOPLE RESPECT.

7.) I was behing their station van (Hummer) one day and the guy ran a red light to catch up with I assume listners to show off. Almost hit the side of a school bus heading north on 4th near 5th avenue. Another case was the music on the truck was loud the a CPD officer stopped him and once the officer told him to turn it down he peeled off and was stopped again and cited.

We need another station supporting hip-hop and R&B to show Power 107 that they need shape up or ship out. Rumors are a format change is nearing soon and the PD maybe heading out. Maybe Radio One is seeing the danger with them and the risk now after numerous FCC complaints especially using the "N" word.

Again, I know I am coming off mean and rude but this is one of the reasons why I went with XM because of local radio is so bad here in Columbus. Plus, I want to make sure that NOT everyone at Power is bad its just some bad management decesions and a couple of careless employees they have.

What do you guys think? I'm sure I will get slapped by someone. LOL.

Wow, out loud and without stuttering!

AMEN, AMEN, AMEN and A-freakin MEN!!!!!!!!!!!

Power is basically a CHR/Rhythmic. They play a few rhythmic songs that a normal Urban wouldn't play. We do need a new urban or rhythmic. Z103 was a good urban besides the crappy quality and all the dead air. I hope they come back or a new fresh Urban/Rhythmic station comes. Columbus is a big market, 107 needs to step up before someone else does for them.

The interesting part of is that FT. Wayne IN. has 3 R&B/Hip-Hop stations and Columbus has only 1. Something is wrong with this picture. Is Radio One trying to block new commers into this market? I know Clear Channel was trying a year or two ago to start up a station for Hip-Hop but the court ruled that Clear Channel was to much of hog in the CMH area. I think they should of let that happen so that WCKX could of stressed for once. WCKX has only been number 1 once. That should tell people somthing.

I regards to the race issue, yea everyone gets upset and everyone calls each other names it's life! Although, when you are on the air representing something you should take that into heart.

This is another thought. Shouldn't WBNS 97.1 or 93.3 switch to this format? How about Z93 FM Todays Hotest Hip-Hop & a R&B?

WTF??? That makes NO sense. Courts do not involve themselves in station formatic decisions. That would be a classic first amendment issue (among others)...

CC won't put anything on that might damage WNCI. End of story.

Ummm, read about it in the Columbus Dispatch and look it up on-line. Understand the business. People can sue and Business can sue. Look it up on the Franklin County web site. So much information about it. Research before you speak. :-\

Guess again.

Uh, 27-year radio veteran and former OSU full scholarship MBA student talking here! (Left not being able to shake the radio addiction...)

Save your personal attacks. Back up your claim with facts. Cite your sources; provide LINKS! Feel free to PROVE me wrong (good luck!), but don't give me "look it up on the Franklin County web site," because for one thing, it's territory not even in the jurisdiction OF the county (among other issues).

Yeah, anybody can "sue." It's another to win. But the fact is, no court has ever told any company they can't change a format just because they might own too much of a market segment. A company could have been unable to make certain station purchases or location moves (whoops! Clear Channel managed to do those in Cols, too!), but had they wanted to flip a station rhythmic, they could.

I, for one, would love to see Hot 105 back! (Worked there briefly; left for a PD gig. Made better money, but didn't have nearly the fun....)

Not doing personal attacks on here. Who cares about a full whatever to OSU. I have a degree as well but don't throw it out as a weapon to someone. (I just hate when people do that. WHO CARES!!) I was just stating that a big fat "No" was handed over FCC ways to start another station from Clear Channel. It had nothing to do with changing a format. It was a fresh a station. I think this is the reason why I am a XM listener than a AM/FM listener. I can even begin to remember the last time I turned on a AM/FM station. Wait a second now I do, 3 years ago in July. That's sad and tells you how much AM/FM suck. Especially here in CMH. Not saying all suck but just about all here in this city do.

I am not a college graduate. Just a 30 plus year radio veteran with an extensive knowledge of FCC rules.

#1: A court in Franklin County has no jurisdiction over who can buy a radio station, or what music it
can play.

#2: That jurisdiction belongs solely before the Federal Communication Commission in Washington, who
(supposedly) does care who buys radio stations, but doesn't give a hoot about what they play, unless
rules regarding obscene, indecent or profane programming would be aired.

I couldn't care less what court documents may say. At the end of the day, the court would rule, "we don't
have jurisdiction over this. Case dismissed."

CC should do a Urban/Rhythmic. NCI listeners will stay because obviously it would be too much hip-hop for them. Plus, if NCI listeners don't like what's on NCI, they can flip to the urban/rhythmic. NCI won't hurt.

Perhaps your "research before you speak" remark implies a certain comprehension inability. I merely acted to provide evidence to the contrary. If you wish to percieve that as a weapon, do what you will; that was not the intent.

Either way, as Kevin and I have each clearly stated, this is simply not county (or city or state) territory.

I respect the original poster's passion but he's not acting very educated, i.e. writing "excepted" two or three times when the actual word is "accepted." I don't really think we needed an alternative to 107.5 in this town. The gap that needs filled is the lack of a real oldies station (93.3 anyone?) ... thanks 107.9!!!

We do need an alternative, LOL. Obviously if you don't listen to 107 you wouldn't think we needed an alternative. The people that do enjoy urban music would want an alternative. 107.9 sucks and so does 93.3 but they both are oldies-oriented.

Umm, yeah my spelling sucked big time. Keep in mind though, I'm not writing a paper just posting thoughts on the internet. :p

Getting a "B" in Business Writing make up for it. It wasn't an "A" but it's still good.

Power 107 to me like everyone else has posted needs another one out here to go up against. Who knows it might make Power better and the new station suck. We don't know until it happens though. ???

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and comments on this. At least I know I am not alone. ;)

LOL. I always wished for another urban. There came Z103- The Most Hip-Hop & R&B. Well, after months, and months it flipped to Mexican. Then, my hopes crashed.

well if you haven't listened to the radio in 3 years how can you comment on the state of it now.... :D

i think that every station needs competition in its market. but would that expand the playlists on those stations? probably not. that's how those stations (urban, chr) work. play the favorites over and over again. but the fact remains that power is always near the top of the ratings for every book so they must be doing something right. now before it's brought up that there is no competition, i will say that there is plenty of competition (cd players, ipods, internet, etc) if the people didn't like the station, they wouldn't listen.
