Changeing from cable internet to T1 when cable goes down.

Changeing from cable internet to T1 when cable goes down.

Our station has internet service from the cable company. 50 meg download and 5 upload. Great speed and about 80% reliable. We also have a T1, 1.5 meg up and download for a backup. Much slower speed but 99% reliable.
My question is: Is there any device that will automaticly switch the services if the cable internet fails. At this time I have the cable and the T1 router both programmed with the same IP address so when the cable fails all anyone has to do is to pull the patchcord from one router and plug it into the other one. (works most of the time)
If anyone has any suggestions on a better way to do this switch I would like to hear it.

Re: Changeing from cable internet to T1 when cable goes down.

I've seen switches that monitor and switch between two T-1s. They were made *I think* by Dataprobe. I think this is it:

I don't think this model is exactly what you're looking for, but it's a good place to start.

EDIT: Wow! I just looked at the price for this thing. There has to be less expensive options out there.

Re: Changeing from cable internet to T1 when cable goes down.

I have two ISP's...how I'd love a cheap method of adding the two speeds together the way they did in the old days when you could take two 56K dials ups and combine them for 112k.

Re: Changeing from cable internet to T1 when cable goes down.

Any two-WAN load-balancing router should do what you are asking for.

Linksys used to have a model RV042 which we have deployed to switch between ISP's. There may be newer models out there.

Re: Changeing from cable internet to T1 when cable goes down.

Check out Watchguard...they have made several firewall/routers with dual WAN ports and auto failover/load balance features.

Re: Changeing from cable internet to T1 when cable goes down.

+1 on the RV042. Unlike most of Linksys' stuff, the RV's are well designed and very robust, and they work reliably. The RV042 does indeed have two LAN-side ports and can either auto-switch or load-balance them.

Cradlepoint MBR-95. You can ditch the T1, and use 3G or 4G as a rollover if you have decent service in your area. If there is more than 1 cell site nearby, you have built in diversity. It works pretty well.

If it's a large operation, go with a genuine Cisco product. Like a 2811 or something where you can put up to 4 cards in the back for failover from WAN, to T1 to 3G etc.

I would also go for the Cisco stuff. Perhaps the cheaper 1xxx series already suit your needs. I have a 1800 series with 2 wan ports for failover/balancing.

Re: Changeing from cable internet to T1 when cable goes down.

We have a T1 line, which we use for our streams, only. We have a fast cable modem for business/e-mail purposes. They are routed separately in the building, however....

If one, or the other fails, our IT guy can switchover by digging via remote into our server, or the switch, not sure which.

Re: Changeing from cable internet to T1 when cable goes down.

pfsense is good, have used it in the past. I would recommend staying away from the "Cisco" RVS series, have not had good luck.

Sonicwall also does dual WAN very well.

I'm sure mikrotik could do it however its not a configuration I'm familiar with.

Thanks for all the suggestions. This gives me a lot of options to explore.
