Changes a comin to Coast

Look for a completely new morning show and mid day voice-tracked show before the start of the Spring book. This station, after a vibrant start a couple of years ago, is now lanquishing in both areas. They are being destroyed in mornings and the "hey, I'm hangin out wid ya while your workin and hopin that you're goin to the happy hour ta-night" may not be working all that well with the target demo. Apparently the new voice-tracker will be able to pronounce the letter G.

Why don't they just do what WCBS-FM did, admit they were wrong and bring back the old format!!!! I, IMHO, can't believe Randy still has a job in the Portland Radio Group,This blunder ranks up there with taking the WJBQ calls off 97.9 in 1886. Magic 93 had consistent ratings for 25 years, they were never #1, but they were NEVER bleeding listeners like today!!!!

Ray-
A couple of weeks ago, WMGX brought in a former morning host from Providence to fill in for Tim while he was out. This was an audition. Coast has a bad problem with WJBQ right now. While a "Top 40", WJBQ is basically a Hot AC / Adult CHR during the day. They're no where close to competing against the Q in the morning. They're not even in the same universe. They need an entire revamp. Tim Wright should be on WCLZ at this stage in his career. He would be perfect for it and it's fortunate that this station/format is in the same building. Then it only get's worse. Right now, middays are awful on Coast. Bless their midday person, who is also on mornings on WPOR, but she has a "push the button" voice and horrible diction. You just can't have that when in-office listening is what you are after. They sound worse than any other station in the market in this daypart right now. That is why both of these changes will occur.

I think WMGX had some 12+ #1's back in the 80's.The station wasn't bad back then.I think things went bad with their liner card Classic Hits days. There were a bunch of slogans that they overdid so bad."MAGIC 93 WMGX Portlands classic hits where we never talk all over the music etc. etc. They drove this down your throat for quite a few years and then stopped using the MAGIC slogan.I believe the last 5 years before they became COAST their ratings weren't consistant, maybe consistantly going down. They waited way too long to make a change.I think they're in big trouble.Change isn't really going to help much unless it's a big change. It's not just the talent,it's the Music too.Any faithful listener to 'JBQ may have Coast as a preset but they won't stay.Changing the voice of middays isn't going to matter if you play the same music.

Andy:
You're probably right. And the liner card postioning ad nauseum became worse when Frank launched. Who can forget the.."A Portland institution for 30 years, because variety is more interesting and more interesting is better and therefore we're better". Wthorne is correct in regards to who was writing those beauties.
Cary is an outstanding NewsTalk programmer. One of the best in the biz. But there is absolutely no musical programming strength in that building. In the past three years we have seen:
1. WPOR get completely taken down.
2. WMGX die, have a dead cat bounce, then just go belly up.
3. WYNZ become the Jimmy Hoffa of Portland radio, the most irrelevant station in the market.

Perhaps it's synonymous, but I would extend 'no musical programming strength' to "no creative energy." That has to be the dullest, most depressing facility on earth. My local Bank of America branch has more flair. And before someone goes on a rant about "the state of radio these days"-- I get it, the priority shouldn't be on shiny new facilities. Agreed.

But then shouldn't priority be on product? Or staff? Or um, something? There are some smart, creative people over at 420 Western. Alas, it appears the original ideas have been ordered to match the interior decorating.

Which leads me to this plea: Corporate America (and assorted dull small-time owners): if radio is rabid, would you please take it out back and shoot it? This slow death march is killing the rest of us.

And how many would that be Underminer. Two? Or do you include the WMGX/WPOR/WCLZ/WYNZ Quad voice trackers as "Coast Staff" as well?

As far as I know, everyone on the Coast staff is still employed. Got any other brilliant observations?

Apparently, he doesn't. LMAO!!! ;D

Re: "The Coast"...what's the deal with Eva's voice? I'm down with the "Rock Chick" voice, but she needs a lozenge or something..
