Changes ahead at Majic 102.7 ???

I frequently listen to WMXJ Majic 102.7 while I'm surfing on the puter. In some respects it keeps me in touch with South Florida and Majic is still one of the few major FMs that still sounds overall like a traditional oldies station with some exceptions described below.

Majic, in my opinion just like so many of its' peers, finds itself in a dilemma. Those who really love oldies radio to include early 60s and some 50s can't be satisfied with the current format. Yet I understand too well that if you sound like your father's oldies station, it's a revenue buster. The reality is most advertisers will avoid you like the plague and the other reality is we live and die by good showing in some target in 25-54.

The other night as I was listening I heard Barry White sandwiched in between Sonny and Cher and Herman's Hermits. Oh and I've heard the same kind of programming elsewhere on these so called 60s/70s stations. But is this really effective in motivating younger demos to your station? My gut tells me no.

Oh yeah, I'm not in the business and all but without sounding like I'm Mr. Ego, the workings of radio have held my fascination and interest for over 4 decades. And I have a track record of being more right than wrong when it comes to the oldies format.

OK. With that said, I'll just offer some opinion here. First off, I like hearing the 3 artists I just mentioned. But my next birthday will bring me out of the cherished advertising demo. So what I may personally like may not be in their best interest. (Dear God, I still feel and act like I'm in my 30s...LOL) Seriously, I don't believe significant numbers of people who really love the 70s and we can include the disco era will tolerate listening to tons of 60s included as this just doesn't have any relevance for them.

One of the things I learned about programming music a long time ago from those in the know is that you have to have "consistancy in sound" - no matter what your format. You can't sound one way one minute and sound differently the next. Listeners get uncomfortable and they move on.

As I've listened to Majic over the last few months, I almost get the impression there are two different formats going on. A few times an hour with boring predictability (every 1/4 hour) a classic hits type song or disco hit will play amid all the mid 60s stuff. It just doesn't sound good.

Traditional oldies are gone and Majic has made what I think is a necessary move to rid itself of songs that sound way too old. But as the expression goes, they need to SHXX or get off the pot. There are tons of pop 70s songs that are not too hard or disco sounding that would be welcome to hear. If they doubled 70s from 3 an hour to let's say 6 and drop Pre-Beatles tunes completely as well as the overly syrupy ballads, they would truly be a 60s/70s station and I think their sound would be more uniform. It's not an easy thing to accomplish but the right selection of songs is key. For what it's worth, disco can be polorizing. There are lots of people who just hate that kind of music and I'd be more inclined to stick with safe songs and save disco for a 70s themed weekend. Just my opinion.

I'd like to see them add more requests to their Majic Cafe program. No slam to the current host but it's obvious Eric Brandon's personna is missed. He really owned middays on Majic and having a little more interraction with the callers could inject a little more excitement. Something is needed in that daypart.

I guess in sum here, I get the feeling Majic isn't sure what it wants to be. I'm aware that Bob Hamilton, the PD is conducting interviews with listeners to find out what they like/dislike about the station. I hope he gets some good feedback. I hope he reads this board too.

What I said here comes out of tons of love I have for the station. I've listened to them in some way or another since they flipped to oldies in the 80s. I do wish them well but they need to make some bold moves yesterday. Thanks for listening!

John... I enjoyed reading it, but it doesn't fulfill what you promised in your subject line.

What changes are ahead?

Younger demos have lots of stations.

I generally enjoy Barry White, Sonny and Cher and Herman's Hermits. At least some.

But they ditched the best part of their playlist (pre-65) a few years ago and you're recommending that they go even further.

They can do what they want, but please don't call it Rock & Roll Oldies.

Majic was a great station, but I can't listen at length any more.

It was a button on my radio through the 80s and 90s. And I miss the music of the golden era or R&R.

No more. I can't listen to 70s music.

You say "I don't believe significant numbers of people who really love the 70s and we can include the disco era will tolerate listening to tons of 60s included as this just doesn't have any relevance for them. " They still have WBGG Classic Rock.

How about those of us who really love the music of the pre-British Invasion era.... and the disco era and the 70s and classic rock don't have any relevance for them?

Hey, I'm not 90 years old -- or even 60. I just stopped liking R&R in the early Beatles years, in junior high.

WMXJ's overall ratings have been drifting lower for a few years now. They are now the lowest they have been in recent memory - down substantially from even a year ago at this time. As the 'oldies' format finds itself in transition nationwide many of its longtime fans have found themselves moving on and switching to other formats - most notably traditional A.C.

A fan of Lincoln Financial Group sister station WLYF - Kevin - recently wrote in praising them, and he got a nice personal response back including an invitation to tour their station. (We discussed it in the 'Isn't This An Exciting Offer?' thread.) I think that you should write-in to WMXJ with essentially what you posted on here. If you do so then let us know what type of response (if any) you get back from them. Radio stations need to hear from their loyal fans so that they know what they are doing right ... and wrong. A good radio station acknowledges those letters. A great radio station makes appropriate changes based on what their loyal fans have told them to do. Radio should be all about the listener. In most cases the listeners take their favourite stations for granted and complain to the walls (or their friends). It only takes a single letter to make a change.

I used to write in to Phil Michaels - Program Director of 'PARTY-93.1' - on a regular basis early on during their existence. I wrote in on a regular basis because he personally replied back to me on a regular basis. Some of my suggestions were actually incorporated on-the-air. I felt like a V.I.P. when I heard something new on 'PARTY' that I had suggested. It felt like I had personally shaped a small portion of the sounds of the station !

Oh, so we have you to blame! ;D j/k

Hey Josh - I was expecting you to say something ! 8)

Since you said something I'll add this:

Notice the key words in my original post - 'early on during their existence'. You know - back when the 'PARTY' was a breath of fresh air in 2002 and into the wee days, weeks, and months of 2003 (as we have both agreed to countless times in the past).

OK - That's all I'll say on that.

Get ready South Floridians. WIOD is getting ready to invade the FM airwaves again on their Clear Channel sister stations with non-stop Tropical Storm / Hurricane Chris widespread news, information, and panic [at the disco] that you can use !

Yes, and those early days were definitely the best! I know that feeling, as well, when something you've suggested is implemented on the air... especially at a station you don't work for! It's always a refreshing moment, knowing you helped build something great.

Of course, for me, there's always that nagging voice in the back of my head saying "if only I could get paid for that!" :)

Another awesome feeling - When I requested [some obscure song] that [a certain station] was not playing at the time sometime during the late-1990s and then having [that certain station] pick-up on [the obscure song] and then watching it become a smash on [that certain station] and then having the actual artist of [the obscure song] write-in personally to my web site and thanking me for his sudden stardom !

[Songs, stations, and artists have been masked to protect the innocent and brilliant.]

Get ready South Floridians. Tropical Storm Chris has been ripped and shredded into little pieces since last night. Tonight it should only be a mere Tropical Depression. It may even dissipate entirely over the weekend. So much for the blanket WIOD coverage on the FM airwaves. Enjoy the sunshine this weekend !
