Changes at 98.7 The Bay?

Earlier this year WTSN/WBYY got a new GM replacing Rick Bean. Now I see Duncan Dewar is gone from the website. Duncan and Rick go way back to the 70s at then Knight Quality Station WHEB AM-FM. The Bay sounds good for what it is... a typical background listen at work AC. WTSN still superserves the community like a local AM should. I hope the station's are not about to give up and cut their local identities. With Clear Channel still in the seacoast NH market, the dial is already filled with automated, tracked clones.

Now for some Seacoast NH radio trivia....:) Who can come up with Duncan's daily sign off verse? "What's done is done........."

Does anyone remember when 98.7 first signed on? It was a conservative AC/standards automated format... Sinatra, Streisand, Carpenters, Manilow, Kenny Rogers, etc.

I bet such a format would do great again in the ratings. It may be harder to sell due to its aging demographics, although how many agency spots does WBYY get anyway? Right now, WBYY competes with WZID Manchester and WHOM Mt. Washington-Portland with virtually the same format. I'm surprised 98.7 is allowed to run Delilah at night since she's also on WZID.

Stuck between Boston, Manchester and Portland, sort of in the Portsmouth market, it sure is a crowded radio dial for 98.7. Especially when you consider Boston has a 98.5 and Portland (or actually North Yarmouth) a 98.9, both full-power.

Who knew they have a website?

WTSN/BAY are owned by a local car dealer in Somersworth. Yep, another dumass greed monger who doesn't know anything about radio, other than how to fire talented people. He should have sold those stations to WOKQ (citadel) years ago when they were hot to trout and stations values were way over inflated. Could have made a killing then. Without a cluster of stations it’s almost impossible to make money. You stupid greedy dumass! So they’ll be an endless parade of GM’s running the show trying to make this greedy bastard happy. Hint you won’t!
I hope the new Gm get's a huge pay package..you'll gonna need it for all the years the stress is going to take off your life. Maybe you're a dumass too.

Not to defend the car dealers actions..(since I was fired after two decades at a local radio station when a new owner took over) but you gotta figure radio advertising is down and also no one is buying cars...dealers are hurting everywhere. This guy probably got rid of Bean due to flat sales numbers and then either Duncan quit in disgust or was later let go because "he was one of Rick's buddies". Just speculation..but we've all seen that happen.

I'm glad I'm out of the biz and working in another advertising media. It fun to see how much WE are billing in each market in contrast to radio stations there. Radio station owners are in a panic in many markets.

Just remember, when one of us is fired by a greedy owner who seems to be in a panic due to down revenues and increasing expenses....we can just go and get another job. The poor bastard who owns the radio station STILL has to make the note payments, payroll taxes (on those he still employs), ASCAP, BMI payments etc etc......he risks (and deserves) to lose everything in todays economy. :)

I would listen to a station that had on Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin stuff all the time. I used to love listening to WXKS AM in Medford when they played that stuff. It was great.

Note to MCC: The word MEDIA is the plural form of the word medium. So unless you have more than one job, you are working in another advertising MEDIUM.

I've always believed in the theory that car dealers should do what they do best...SELL CARS! And not become radio or television spokespeople for ANY dealership they represent! This theory also applies to having a local radio or television personality sitting in the lobby of an automobile or truck franchise telling a prospective buyer to: "GO AHEAD AND KICK THE TIRES WHILE I POUR YOU A CUP OF COFFEE & DRAW UP A CONTRACT!" :p

If the Bay was 100,000 watts that format will would be unstoppable and a revenue cash cow. But at 6000 watts is doesn’t cover the entire metro or tsa. In this market,if more arbitron books go south or west and stations like the bay and tsn are screwed blued and tattooed.

To make money rates must go up. At $30.00 for a sixty nobody makes money.
WOKQ, WHEB get $150.00 and they make money. And understand their money comes from agencies, and national rep firms and local. Most local advertisers can’t afford those rates. Stations also depend on clustering to bring in the CPP and get on buys With 2 local stations with marginal ratings you can’t really cluster. Yes I know relationships count, but agencies orders count and they buy numbers.

If bean got fired because of poor sales, ok then what? Who’s next? If the foundation is broken how many tricks can anyone else really have? Rick is a good guy who spent many years selling radio in the seacoast market. I suspect Rick had many great relationships and knew everybody. Either you’re in the radio business or you’re not. WTSN and the Bay are toys for another ego driven dumass moron.

When this guy took over had everyone punching a time card. That quickly ended as you can imagine radio people work hard and tirelessly. Keep them on salaries instead. Dumass moron.

Bob, you should have sold to Citadel when the opportunity was hot. It's too late now, their stock in in the tank at $1.50. That's One dollar and fifty cents. And Clear Channel want's out of the radio business. Who's left? You! Dumass..

I toured the then brand new WOKQ facility when it was first completed (and still owned by Doc and JJ). There were if I recall two empty studios that were for "future expansion". I said to my tour guide.."oh you mean a home to WTSN and The Bay"...The tour guide winked and nodded and said.."well ya never know" So I'm sure it HAD been talked about back then. Speaking of Doc and JJ..their non-competes with Citadel have expired. They could make a go of those two properties.

You hear all the complaints about corporate and how they have ruined the biz and the stations should be owned locally.

Now your saying corporate should have bought the stations.
