Changes at CBS-FM!!!!

Why would cbs-fm go chr or any other format when they're top 5. Even better when they had the immortal Dandy Dan, Dan Ingram, Ron Lundy, Etc

However a major shift change at CBS-FM in 6mos will occur. That's from Dan The Man :D

dude, where are you getting your information from?? inquiring minds want to know... :)

I've heard that they're going to an ALL New York Dolls format, with some Cherry Vanilla and Wayne County thrown in for flavour!!

What else have the voices in your head told you?

I heard it will be all Peruvian Goat Chants along with the Greatest Hits of Osama Hasnt-Bin-Laden Years or an all Commercial Jingles format.

The way I interpreted the original post on the topic was that A CBS FM station in New York (and one in L.A.) would be changing formats, not THE WCBS-FM (specifically) in New York was changing formats.

Exactly. Several of the trade eLetters have stated this as allmost a given, with 97.1 in LA and either Fresh or 92.3 in NY as the candidates. The belief is that recent executive realignments at CBS in LA as well as the non-renewal of the Leykis contract at Westwood (and, of course, KLSX in LA) being the needed preliminary steps.

It's never been suggested that WCBS-FM would be changed.

Right! Why would CBS risk another PR nightmare by blowing up the only successful formula they can find for 101.1?

I have been noticing people going around the board posting this "switch to CHR" as fact. Someone even posted to the Dallas board. I think we should wait a couple of weeks before jumping to conclusions.

The reports are that "A CBS station" will flip in each market. That means "a station owned by CBS, Inc." It does not mean WCBS-FM or KRTH.

In LA, 97.1 is likely, and the one the trades are focusing on. In NY, it's 92.3 or, maybe, the PPM-punished Fresh.

Several of the e-mailed trade publications are announcing this as a fait accompli.

I agree with you, Garrett - I don't think WCBSFM would even RISK the chance of another publicity nightmare - besides which, they ARE a VERY successful station in the ratings these days...

Now as for who will make the switch, my money's on 92.3 - "Disco 92"?? hmmm.... 8)

I have been hearing some funky 80's tunes on the weekends? Like Pretty Poison, Terence Trent Darby, and
Flock of Seasgulls?????? Weird stuff.

'CBS sounds great with the '80's music thrown in! Though, I've never heard the artists you mention on there, except when they to the Top 100, Top 40 or whatever from any given year.

Andrea,

I agree completely. CBS seems committed to the Classic Hits format and is doing it well. Besides....it is one of their best performing stations in the market. They have a good thing going. In an economy like this....I wouldn't mess with something as solid as CBS-FM or anything that is doing at least moderately well. As for 92.3 - who knows. They don't seem to be getting anywhere.

FWIW, CBS dumped R/AC in Dallas at 107.5 for Spanish today. So it could be coming.

But that's NOT my whole point here - if you read the FIRST sentence of my previous post, I SERIOUSLY DOUBT that WCBS-FM would even make the RISK of flipping again - the publicity from the ORIGINAL flip was unheard of for such an event...

Secondly, again, YOU DON'T MESS WITH SUCCESS AND WCBS-FM IS SUCCESSFUL!! Their numbers are up in all parts!!

Thirdly, I had just read on another thread about 92.3 possibly going some kind of AC or CHR in the coming days - so, right now, it's anybody's guess...

CBS-FM's not going away, not now, probably not ever. It finishes in the top 5 in the NYC market in cume, AQH 12+ and AQH 25-54. It has TSL numbers to die for, which further help it to that nice healthy 5 AQH share and third place overall. It's arguably the strongest station ratings-wise in the entire coast-to-coast CBS station portfolio, rivalled only by WINS, or maybe WBZ, in that department.

Neither is Fresh going away anytime soon. It's a growing station with a cume that's also in the top 5 12+ in the latest NYC Arbitron PPM reports. It has further to go in 12+ AQH, turning in an improving but still less-than-optimum 2.7. Clearly they need to work on boosting TSL in order to get an AQH that matches the strength of the cume. But that's not too hard a task, actually. A few tweaks to playlist, personality presentation and formatics can do wonders without any major format surgery.

K-Rock, on the other hand, is at 1.5 and falling, turning in the second-worst performance of any of the full-market coverage commercial FMs in NYC (beating only the hopeless WRXP). If any station in the CBS cluster is a candidate for a format transplant it's 92.3. But you have to wonder if going head to head with Z100 will get them what they really want, or just cannibalize audience away from Fresh without getting them the overall traction in the market they need. They might be better off to wait out the end of Howard's contract with Sirius/XM, bring him in while moving O&A to their natural afternoon daypart, and revive the FreeFM concept with the key parts for a successful FM talk franchise finally in place on one single station. Or else try the one thing that'll guarantee them a 3 share, high cume and the love of suburban women and 35-54 men (the soccer moms and NASCAR dads)--a personality-driven modern country station. MIght be time to challenge the conventional wisdom about what ad agencies will buy--IMHO they'll now buy anything that draws real numbers.

You had me agreeing until the last paragraph. There is NO WAY a country station in NYC will pull a three share, especially when other formats that are more in tune with the NYC audience aren't cracking a 3, and especially when the last incarnation of a country station was barely cracking a 2 share, at best. The success of a couple of crossover artists DOES NOT equate to success for a full-time format in that genre....that's why they are crossover artists!

Country has not done well even in its supposed "home base" in the suburbs in all of its recent attempts. It will not do any better than the abysmal K-Rock or RXP in the ratings and might bill worse as well.

As for CHR, the only thing I really see stopping CBS from doing that is money....if they want to have a shot at succeeding against Z100, it will require a major investment in an airstaff, promotions, advertising, major events, and much more. They can't run a CHR station like a Jack station and expect to succeed. If they do make the proper investment though, I think they can score big.

As for cannibalizing the audience of Fresh? Hey, if Z100 and KTU can coexist, or Z100 and Power, or Power and KTU, or KTU and Lite, or WINS and WCBS-AM, or K-Rock (barely) and WFAN, then Fresh and a CBS Radio CHR can co-exist as well.

Any news about CBS Radio in NYC? 97.1 FM TALK in LA is apparently dismissing mornings and some other people I believe this Friday and rumored to be going CHR.

What signals to me something may be up is the fact that CBS has not denied the claims....instead they opted to not comment. Hm.

WXRK version 2 has been here for 21? months and has shown virtually no growth. Look at the ratings....if it hasn't shown growth of any amount in almost 2 years, it's likely not going to.
I would think the 92.3 freq could be much more successful than it is currently.
