Changes at CBS19 Tyler

Today was weatherman Doc Deason's last day. He's leaving KYTX after three years and going into real estate. Also leaving today was reporter Vickie Pierre, although I don't know where she's going.

I hope John Adams likes dogs.

Tyler Television Round-Up

Yep, CBS19 is changing weather guys. Good luck to Doc in real estate. He's a local guy with a good name, he should do just fine without having to carry a dog around everywhere he goes.

New weekend sports guy at CBS 19 is Mike Alzamora, replacing Tim Cyr, who was out about a month ago.

Also, Lindsay Wilcox at KLTV is leaving to freelance in Dallas.

Maya Golden at KLTV is elevated to Sports Director. Kevin Berns is leaving in a few weeks, getting out of the business.

Further bulletins as events warrant.

The problem with the TV gigs in Tyler, even most of the on-air people, is the lack of pay. Despite my not liking Tyler too much, my job at KLTV was the best TV job I've ever had. Simply, because they were far and away the market leader and they cared about what they put on-air. However, I'm still paying off debts that I accrued during my tenure in the Tyler-Longview market. I was living in a small, one-bedroom apartment in Tyler and I could barely afford it and had to use credit cards to eat and for other expenditures. If you want to stay in Tyler, most people have to venture into other business opportunities to make money. I wonder how much KYTX was paying Doc. I know it's probably not as much as they are paying Adams and is no where near what KLTV is paying Scirto. Unless you're one of the main anchors, or you have a tremendous reputation in the market, you're barely making enough to get by. This is why there is so much turnover in talent in that market, as well as every small market. That's why I moved to Houston. I was able to buy a nice house, afford a new automobile and I even have money to eat with and I get to do a little traveling to, so if I want to go back and visit Tyler, I can.

I wish Doc well. The Real Estate Market has bottomed out, but with his charm and personality, I'm sure he'll do well in it. Not to mention, if it doesn't work out, he can always fall back on that pesky meteorology certification or go back to radio.

I gotta second that, Snoman. When I worked at KLTV (and even earlier, KTRE) in production/operations, I had a lot of fun AND felt very productive.

When I first moved to Tyler, I didn't know anyone, so I moved into the cheapest efficiency apartment I could find. We got paid weekly, but it took more than one check to pay my $240 rent!

I learned a lot and put a lot of work back into the station's product. But the pay wasn't there in production or even when I moved to news after college.

But at least back when I was there, the Bufords still owned 7 & 9 and they paid for most of my tuition and books. It was a big help AND made me feel like they cared.

Speaking of the CBS19 changes, is John Adams the only one who now has a "Tyler TV Trifecta" (KLTV/KETK/KYTX) under his belt? I know there are several at 19 that have been at one or the other, but is JA the only one to have been at all three?

Perhaps Bryan Houston was the other one...??

Houston has done it, I believe Kelli Weise also has. David Smoak has done KLTV/KEYK/KFXK, but not CBS 19.

Doc Deason worked at KLTV on extreme mornings with me way way back in the day, but was never on air.

Didn't know Doc did KLTV, too. I knew he was at KETK for awhile before heading out to Abilene.

Extreme mornings? Is this Morgan?

Nope, I'm not Morgan, although I worked with him on TV.

Doc worked on the studio crew way back in the late 90s before going to radio. We did the half-four Daybreak and the Horace McQueen Show. Sheesh, that was a long time ago. He was just studio, never on-air.

Kelli W. was a Longview reporter for KLTV in mid-90s, around 1995. She went to KETK as an anchor after that, then left town and came back when CBS19 came on the air.

Yeah, I was there with Doc, too. It was right before Doc went on to work at KISX and KNUE radio.

David may not be on KYTX, but I believe his radio show is now being telecast on their sister station.

Has KFXK relaunched their 9pm newscast yet?

I couldn't remember who else was there with us. Good Lord, that was early. I can't believe I did that for a whole year.

Smoak's radio show is webcasted on the KYTX Channel 2 CW station. No 9pm newscast as of yet.
