Changes at CC/Chicago....

According to today's (3/6) allaccess...

Effective Immediately, Elroy Smith is just the PD for WVAZ (V103). The new PD for WGCI is Kris Kelley, formerly of CC sister WJLB in Detroit.

Thoughts?

Darren Davis seems very determined to get everyone he knows from Detroit and assimilate programming over to Chicago.

More importantly, why anyone would change anything with the station that's number 1 is beyond me. But I suppose in the long run it makes more sense for Elroy to focus on one station, and I'm sure he'll pull V103 up even more with the focused energy.

Always interested in what Darren the Dweeb and Earl the Pearl are up to as they pursue their real careers as shoe salesmen masquerading as radio executives.

Pretty jacked up when being #1 isn't even good enough for Clear Channel anymore! What the hell do they want? Elroy Smith broke Alisha Keys! She thanked Elroy Smith PERSONALLY during her acceptance speech, as she won her first Grammy!

Clear Channel is the Bush Admninistration of the radio industry! In announcing their NEW PD, they have the unmitigated gall to actually say, "She'll lead the charge at WGCI to KEEP [empasis mine] the station #1".

Let this be a lesson to all you other #1 ranked PD's in Clear Channel... You're only as good as the last grammy artist you broke! What an outrage!

The leadership in CCU-Chicago is scary///elroy should be the damm gm of the place. He made gci, made urban radio..and hes taking orders from a couple of scarecrows with no heart or brains for that matter. He must be getting paid handsomely because radio one would hire him in a sec to fix their messes inluding the beat in LA....i smell a housecleaning in chicago by years end in my opinion..earl and his crew better get back to the airport lobby and find their spots.

That is a force out.....plain and simple...It wouldnt look right for them to just fire him. It will give him a chance set up retirement plans......

Didn't Clear Channel do the same thing to Marv Dyson? Like three weeks after he was voted "Broadcaster of the Year in Chicago"! Oh, no wait... I think they just FIRED Marv. Looks like success is the kiss of death at Clear Channel, where the really want "LESS" not "MORE"... talent that is!

Dear atlanta etc etc: I live for the day when Earl the Pearl and his little minion Darren the Dweed are booted out on their overpaid derrières. But I don't hold my breath. They make money for CC and money is the only reason CC is in the business (cue one of the CC apologists and a long-winded and boring lecture on how CC has actually enhanced radio...)

I dont know about that part of making money, etc etc for clear channel...looking at the Miller Kaplan for Chicago they (ccu chicago) looks like they had a down year. They moved down the road their DOS in Dec (that they hired in Jan) and promoted someone from within and Earl hired a bunch of his cronies as sales managers...dont look good my friend in market #3 when you unload the group DOS after 11 months...sounds like someone(s) arent hitting there most important numbers - CASH! Arbitron dont mean squat...convert those numbs into dollars - which doesnt look like thats happening?

from your mouth to god's ear

And bringing in an APD (glorified MD) from Detroit to PROGRAM the #1 Station is going to fix things?

Nice that Chicago is now a training ground for APDS from Detroit!

I'm sure the salary cut that went along with the hire will no doubt help the bottom line.

That probably has more in play than we all realize.

Damixah, you may be right about Elroy being forced out. Again, I bring up the point that tampering with the products that are number 1 is brainless. However, Elroy has probably earned himself a nice paycheck over the years and with Clear Channel's investment strategy changing, more pressure could be placed on cutting costs. Get rid of the old timer with the big paycheck and replacing them with someone at half the salary is the common strategy of corporate America today.

Im sure there will be a cut in pay for Elroy too (in 3 to 6 months)....that will let him stay on board long enough to give "trade secrets" to the New PD of 'GCI.....
He owns & operated a station in Bermuda for 3 years now (which he started)...by now its turning a profit...so he wont be hurting by any means money wise......

Eh, well, depending on how much the startup costs were and how much the cash flow is it may not be necessarily true. But a good theory...

Let's be real. Bermuda is an island country with a population of about 66,000 people. If it were an Arbitron market, it'd be ranked 298th, between Meridian, MS and Brunswick, GA...not exactly booming metropoli.

Honestly, how much revenue can be generated there?

It's just a slap in the face for a PD of Elroy's caliber and stellar reputation to be treated so shabbily by the likes of Clear Channel. I have no doubt that the WGCI air personalities are quite concerned about their futures. Particular Crazy Howard and Tony Scofield.

With the recent departure of one half of the Bad Boyz (Mike Love), it would appear that somebody wants to do some tinkering.

CC has been slapping faces since Earl the Pearl, that glorified shoe salesman, blew into town.

Who cares about ratings or market rankings when you OWN a station in BERMUDA? If you could support yourself enough to live there year round, why not? Especially if not doing so means putting up with more of the [EDIT]that CC is dishing out right now?

[EDIT-profanity]

Correction: Elroy is a PART owner of the station in Bermuda, not the sole proprietor. I'm not confident revenue from the station can maintain operational overhead and provide the lifestyle in which Elroy and his family are accustomed.
