STEVE KONRAD exits his CLEAR CHANNEL/COLUMBUS-CENTRAL, OH RVPP and Dir./Programming post to return to HUBBARD BROADCASTING as Dir./Programming AT KSTP-A, WFMP, and WIXK/MINNEAPOLIS. This marks a return for STEVE, who was PD at KSTP-A from 1991-98.

Plus they have been doing some moving around of producers because I remember hearing on Cannon's show Friday night his producer was moving to days, and last night there was a girl at the other end of the phone when I called in, which I am assuming is his new producer. Interesting to see what happens over there once they get a new PD.

Big deal... He did not do much while he was here. Maybe the next PD will take some action to make WTVN more listenable and not so predictable (boring).

I would have to guess that these producer changes were in the process of occuring and have nothing to do with Konrad leaving. There had been an opening for that day shift for awhile...

WTVN: What Would YOU Do?

OK, so you're an armchair programmer...to quote a female country singer, "that don't impress me much"...

In all seriousness, as the aforementioned armchair programmer, what would YOU do to, as you put it, "make WTVN more listenable and not so predictable (boring)"? To answer, you don't have to give specifics...I'm (seriously) just curious what kind of programming you'd like to hear on 610. What would make it more interesting to you?

And anyone who answers "a loutish, 'Joe Six-Pack' man who eats on the air and is proud of his small vocabulary" gets thrown out of the competition. Oh, sorry, that's what we're stuck with UP HERE. :D

How about dropping Glenn Beck and putting in a local show from 9a to 11:45, run Paul Harvey 11:45 to noon, and run Rush Limbaugh LIVE noon to 3p, and have John Corby start at 3p. I wouldn't change any other thing.

Ooh, Tom Thon, the Tarlek clone wouldn't like THAT! Too much cash in that noon hour...that's the only reason it still exists. Sales won't give up the cash. Bobby Hatfield tried to move them off that hour back in the early 90's, but Perry Frey wouldn't lose that money fix, either. Besides, it would make it a heck of a lot tougher to time squeeze Rush.

I don't think Steve Konrad did a bad job at all considering the environment any CC guy has to work in. Having been a big fan of his work at KSTP, I could hear how, in recent days, he had subtly changed the way the imaging on the station sounds...less brutish WLW-style hype and more smoothness.

Someone needs to light a fire under Connors the way Hatfield did. His show approached being entertaining on occasion back then. Now, he sounds like a "presenter". He could just as easily be a network booth announcer as a morning man. John Corby's arrogant swagger may appeal to some Buckeyes, but it's a turn-off for me. I like Joel Reilly...he'd be the future of the station in my imagination.

I do think that they have a lot of pukers on their air in secondary roles that sound like they reside in German Village...not that there's anything wrong with that, but it doesn't sound right on a station that's supposed to be the heritage news station in the region. John Remy may have not been the best news director, but he was a hell of a talent behind the mic. Nobody there is even close.

And I would recommend to ANY news talk station that, if they cater to people who use talk radio as a background as they fall asleep (a la Coast-To-Coast AM), they might consider removing all heavily produced sounders and crap after 11pm and before 5am. They would keep more dials tuned in for AM drive if they did. CC stations overproduce everything anyway, but it's especially apparent overnight.
