changes at Cumulus-Melbourne

Word out of Cumulus in Melbourne is that Ted Turner has been fired as the operations manager and WHKR's (Hit Kicker 102.7) pm drive jock.

Also on the chopping block are pm drive jocks Eric Deniro and PD Callahan from WSJZ (Pirate 95.9) ahead of a rumored format change. WINT-AM (1560) would bring its oldies format to 95.9 with possible simulcast (at least for now) on the old frequency as well.

If it's true, it's a good day for country radio on the Space Coast...His arrogance, ineptitude and lack of on-air creativity and talent have held back that building and in particular, the Hitkicker, for years. As for Callahan and Deniro, two class acts that deserved a better signal, better promotion and more support.

If Turner had a nickel for every time he said "uh" on the air, he'd be able to own Cumulus by now. I've heard he was not the nicest person either.

As for Pirate, I haven't heard a single quality break from any of their jocks. That station was a cluster to begin with. I'm sad Mancow will be out of the market.

I have not heard WSJZ in the past few weeks, but I know they changed from mainstream rock to well tested dinosaur rock a few months back. IMHO they were better off staying mainstream. Those kind of stations are too few and far between nowadays. If I want consultant approved fossil music I'll listen to WHTQ. As for them going oldies, isn't there enough stations on the space & treasure coasts catering to the over 35 crowd? Enjoy your two share cumulus ;D

2 share if they're lucky...they already got beat to the oldies format by 98.5...and though that is the most mediocre presentation of oldies i've ever heard, it has a real nice signal and has been discovered by the older demos already....that 95.9 signal is just too weak to penetrate any businesses for office listening on top of it all....With Turner gone, a third of the problem has been eliminated...now all they need to do is get rid of Dan " Arthur Carlson" Carelli and then sell the group to a real media company and there will be some real improvement...til then, rest assured, the mediocrity will continue....by the way, If you want to congratulate Ted Turner personally on his firing, he's opened up a pizza place on Palm Bay Rd.. Stop by and get uhhhhhhhhhhhhh slice. I can't imagine what his customer service must be like...lol....

Re: Here's a thought for later on this month

If WSJZ is indeed going to flip to oldies soon, here's a thought of what may happen. ABC radio networks is launching an all Christmas channel that runs from Thanksgiving thru Christmas day. WINT already runs one of their music formats already (true oldies channel). Now as if the space coast won't have enough stations going all Christmas in three weeks already, (WLRQ, WQOL & WOSN based on last year) look for WINT and/or WSJZ to go this format as a stunt with a return to oldies on December 26.

Ted Turner seems to have finally had to sleep in the bed he has made. Personally no love lost for the man. It does leave an interesting situation in Melbourne. No OM at Cumulus and no PD at WBVD. Some big holes in programming in that town now. And formats all up in the air at this point on a few different outlets. Lets see where the magic 8 ball lands on the formats this time.

I'm now hearing word that Callahan may actually be retained at Cumulus and replace Ted Turner as the PD of Hitkicker at least. Super! Bring that 1.2 share from Pirate over to 102.7!
